Toyota has unveiled a motorsport-inspired special edition version of its popular 86 sports car.

Based on the Toyota 86 GTS, the new Toyota 86 Blackline brings new looks to the model – but not more performance.

The most noticeable change is a body kit sourced through Toyota's TRD tuning arm, bringing a new three-piece rear spoiler, front spoiler and lower skirts to the party.

Toyota's regular 17-inch wheels are now finished in gloss black, and there are red accents on its seats, steering wheel, shift knob, handbrake and doors.

Power remains capped at 147kW and 205Nm from an unchanged 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine. Likewise, the brakes, tyres and suspension are carried over from the GTS, making this a cosmetic rather than a performance-based upgrade.

While that may disappoint enthusiasts, it does help keep costs down to $37,990 for manual models and $40,490 for the automatic – $2000 more than the regular GTS and $8000 more than the entry-level GT.

That gives owners room to source their own wheel, brake and suspension upgrades – something hundreds of customers have already done with existing models.

Having found more than 15,000 homes locally since the car was introduced in 2012, the 86 is undoubtedly one of the most popular sports machines on sale.

Toyota has restricted production of the Blackline to 250 manual models and 200 with automatic transmissions.

Toyota 86 Blackline pricing and specifications

Torque: 205Nm at 4000rpm
