Ferrari has cleaned up at the International Engine of the Year Awards overnight, claiming three category wins with its all-new 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8.

The 492kW engine powers the new 488 GTB and 488 Spider and won over a jury of 63 international motoring journalists with its combination of performance and efficiency.

Ferrari's turbo V8 not only won the overall Engine of the Year category is also won best New Engine, Performance Engine and best engine between 3.0- and 4.0-litres.

"It's a giant leap forward for turbocharged engines in terms of efficiency, performance and flexibility," said Graham Johnson, co-chairman of the International Engine of the Year Awards. "It truly is the best engine in production today and will forever be remembered as one of the all-time greats."

It is the first engine in more than a decade to claim the top prize to feature more than six-cylinders. For the past eight years the award has been won by a succession of four-cylinder motors.

But it wasn't just the V8 that won Ferrari a gong, the Italian company also claimed the Above 4.0-litre category with its 6.3-litre V12 from the F12 TdF; the only non-turbocharged engine to win a prize.

It was the year of performance engines with six of the eight categories won by engines that power sports cars, including the 1.4 to 1.8-litre category that was claimed by the 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol hybrid powertrain from the BMW i8.

Porsche's new 3.0-litre twin-turbo flat-six for its updated 911 took out the 2.5 to 3.0-litre class, Audi's 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo from the RS3 and RSQ3 took out the 2.0 to 2.5-litre award and the Mercedes-AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo from its '45' range of models took out the 1.8 to 2.0-litre prize.

At the other end of the spectrum the Below 1.0-litre category was taken out by Ford's 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost engine from the Fiesta and Peugeot-Citroen's 1.2-litre three-pot won the 1.0-1.4-litre category.
