Default **URGENT** XR8 engine knock

Well it has **** itself again. This time it's an engine knock, i'll try to explain it as best as possible. It is a mettalic sound that is at half engine speed, I can't tell exactly where it is coming from but it does increase with revs. The car also now has a miss and is really running like a dog. Also does anyone know if there are any mechanics or anyone able to help me with this tomorrow as I am at my better halfs parents place in Hampton Park and I need to be able to get home. If anyone on here is able to help there will be something in it for you ( I hate to have to ask but i'm desperate).

Cheers,
Russ.

Pop the valve covers off and have a good look. Sounds like maybe a busted rocker/pushrod/valvespring...

Dont run or drive the engine any further (if at all possible) before having a good look.

I would do that but atm I am without any tools. I have had to drive it about 30k today (from lilydale to Hampton Park) and it hasn't gotten any worse.

you could find which cylander is a dud by removing 1 spark plug lead at a time when it stops missing that is your cylander, you can doit with the engine running if your careful....... but its probably easier to pull 1 lead off at a time then start the motor, if you zapped you will feel it, you will know what cylander too look at for investigation, just be carefull getting leads off.

you did say you werent sure where it was coming from, if it was valve gear oriented it might help pin point it.

Whoosha had the same sounding problem early this year, turns out it was a broken valve spring, fingers crossed.

Quick way to get rid of the noise is to take the rocker cover off, find which valve/spring is busted, and take the rocker off, & remove the pushrod. Then put it all back together and remove the spark plug lead to that cylinder at the coil pack end. Hope it all works out. Bloke and Woosha are legends for answering your call to arms!

Was the valve OK, or was it stuck in the guide?

Didn't pull the rocker cover as it could be heard with a piece of hose. It's off to G&D on a tow truck tomorrow (simply because that is the only way I can get it over there). If anyone knows of a good tow truck let me know A.S.A.P.

Casper was impressed with the guy who rescued his XR6 on the weekend. I think he mentioned it was Associated Towing, or something similar.

Too late, just washing hands and putting tools away whilst Tracey is loading the Econovan with my garage sale specials.

70m throttle body, BA 18's and Herrod headers.
