Hey All,
Has anyone done a conversion to their XR6's and put V8's into them? Would this be a terribly hard project to do, I have replaced engines in cars before, but I am guessing this might be a little different, What would I need to change apart from the engine (obviously), exhaust, computer and the clutch? My XR came with the upgraded brake package so that should be ok, would I have to change anything in the diff to acomodate for the new power? Cheers all, |

I am putting a T3 motor in my wagon in a few weeks. Will let you know how it goes.

depends, he may have a lot of other things done to the car, which would justify keeping it and dropping in the new motor...
or if he wanted to fit a T3 5.6 litre, buying an xr8 then ripping its engine out to fit a new V8 isnt justified... depends on the situation |

Yeah, I can understand if he wanted to do something different like a wagon or a T3 engine like you said but I would have thought it would be a lot of trouble and money to convert his XR6 when it would be easier just to buy an XR8.
Im not saying he shouldnt do it, just I would have thought it wouldnt be worth it thats all. Sorry just looked at the link you put up REDAUXR6II, and whats with the light grey steering wheel? Aren't they usually charcoal (or blue or red grips) on XRs?

It would be easier to buy a wrecked xr8 and swap everything over. It's all the little things that will add up turning the project into an expensive nightmare...

Yer now that I think about it and look at prices and things it would be smarter to spend the money on a custom edit on the XR6 and something like a bodykit

If you're only after a mildly modded XR8 then just trade it.
If you convert, you're left with a car that has cost you more than an XR8 would have and it will have crappy resale as not too many people looking at a car of this age would want one that's been converted.

The easiest way to get a V8 is to go and buy a XR8. The modest way is to buy a wrecked XR8 and transplant it into your car. The hardest way is to do a conversion. For the price of the conversion you could sell your XR6 buy an XR8 and still have money in your pocket.
I got the T3 motor because its the best motor Ford have released to date in my view. It will cost a lot to get if you a lucky enough to find one. Then double that price, because you will need a stronger gearbox, diff, better suspension, big brakes. ect. Put it this way, the amount of money that has / will be going into my wagon I would be very close to go and buy a T3. also by now I could have the motor in the car but I am saving to do the driveline at the same time. As for a parts list its very long and will have it up in my project thread (when ever I get to finish it).

Personally, I would bite the bullet and sell your current XR6 and just buy an XR8. With luck, and depending what's on the market, you could end up with a better car in every way - and not just because of the V8, but other things like less KM's, factory options you don't currently have... all sorts of things.

why is everyone being so negative about this? yes, perhaps it would be easier and cheaper in the long run to just buy a dedicated v8. but what ever happened to the "i did it myself, look at the great job!" ?? how many of you have bought an old six, ripped out that and put in a V8? wouldnt it have been easier to buy a V8 in that model? perhaps, but didnt it feel good to say "i did all the hard yards to get like this".
i say, go hard redauxr6ii. show us that it can be done, and put up a mod thread about it so others may follow in your foot steps and say, "hey, red showed us how to do this, and it is awsome!" besides, with xr6 badging, youd sure as hell blow the competition out of the water, "ha its a six, no worries.........what the hell??!!!!!!" |

wiring looms become a pain in the *** when you find out that you need to replace or make your own to suit the V8. there is a thread somewhere were somone converts an EB I6 to a V8. im guessing your job would be simular.

i agree with the consensus, you can doit but it will cost heaps and, it would be less painfull and be cheaper in the long run to just trade it on a factory v8.

he could have gone and used a V8 loom, but decided for his own benefit to see how it all worked to make his own wiring looms.., just so he would get a better understanding of it... you dont "need" to fabricate your own loom, all the looms from a smashed V8 donor car will all pretty much plug and play with your car, so long as you get a donor thats the same year as tthe one you have |

i wouldnt bother unless ur putting in an 5.6 or a 220 motor. As the performance wont be all that better than a XR6 unless ur going to go all out and modify it.. Keep the 6 and turbo it

imo if your car is basically a stock xr6 and you haven't done heaps of custom work to it then trade it on a stock xr8. Like said above, resale will still be ****, insurance will be hard to get because the cars build plates won't match the engine type so you cannot pass it off as an xr8 to insure it etc etc..

If your going to put a stock V8 in out of a XR8 then buy a XR8. BUT if your going to power up & mod the V8 then go for it & put into your XR6.

Personally if it was just a normal Falcon/Faimont with a clapped out motor and you loved it and wanted to keep it I'd say go for it, but a XR6, dont do it mate sell it and buy a XR8, or if its performance your after go turbo you'll probally spend less or = to and have better performance
