Default Drive an EF/EL & Cant see at night??

The green/brown layer that forms on the headlights is actually organic, a living thing, not a fungus or a moss but a type of bug! Aeroguard probably wont kill it, but it sure makes it let go of your headlight and leaves no sign of it being there or, any scratches from sandpaper or buff marks on anything. It only takes seconds, Spray on wipe off with paper towel. You will be so impressed you will want to buy me a beer. I drink VB!!

Meh, can see ferpectly with my EL at night. The only bugger is the road I drive on on the way home doesn't have sufficient illumination on it so you can't see squat when there is an oncoming car which is made worse by rain.

I've had headlight covers on my EL ever since I have had them, they used to be called Skinz. Basically they are a think piece of contact shaped to your headlights that you just stick on.

AU2 Pursuit Ute, thanks for the info - my stepdad's EL Ghia has the brown headlights.

Haven't looked at the back of the lights yet (he's an hour away) but is it hard to get inside the assembly to wipe it out?

Interesting theory, not sure it makes sense to me though. I've noticed the discolouration of the headlights reduces after washing the car, which suggest to me it is washing off some of the oxidised plastic, and I would expect Aerogard is just doing this more effectively as it would be a better solvent than plain water (it has an alcohol base)

Amongst other plastic-lensed headlights on other types of cars I've noticed with the same issue, the first model Mondeo (HA) gets the same discolouration on the low beam lens inside the headlight unit itself - how would a bug get to that within a sealed headlight?

I was under the impression it only really affects plastic lenses the most (ie. EF)...and that its when lights are used at night, and the lenses are wet...

EFs had dreadful headlights from new and after about five years they go brown and are useless. They used to reckon the EF XR headlights were even worse.

the only thing that goes wrong with them really is that on the low beam projectors, the reflector cup(the back part) is made out of a fragile plastic, and can melt...... its more a problem with high wattage globes than anything else though.

they dont discolour, as the lenses are glass not plastic

Nice timing on that, considering you would have likely gotten wet if you went outside while you posted that :

raining for the whole week, i was wondering what that clear wet stuff falling from the sky was.

Ive noticed just about most late model cars are also suffering the same fate. Commodores, Supras, Skylines, Astras, etc. Even the three year old Patrol at work is doing it.

But it hasnt happened to my EL, because it has headlight protectors!

meh, my EF headlights are long gone. Not even a star treck plot could come up with a way of bringing them back from the dead.

my only interest now is seeing how yellow they get and for keeping a record of what sort of bugs I have driven through over the years.
