Default Civil rights more now than the 70's or....

From another thread, it would seem that some believe that our civil rights have not been eroded since the 1970's ( or there abouts). Very interesting. I guess that there are some here, such as sporting shooters' that would disagree.

Here is a question, mainly to those that have been around since, and during, the 1970's, what do you reckon. Do we have more rights now than 30 odd years ago? Are we over governed ? (think phase 4)

I am sure we can keep this sane and friendly.

I don't think we have any more rights per se. It's just that we are more aware of what our legal rights are. More and more people are asserting themselves to make their rights available to them IMHO.

Lol, meeting the desires of the gun nuts is hardly representative of the civil rights of most australians.

I was born in 81. I can easily see that "civil rights" have been eroded. But then... it was a different world back then. I place civil rights in quotation marks, because so many civil right activists argue from a purely ideological standpoint - "we should be able to etc etc etc"

Without taking the thread off your chosen topic, it would be valid to consider the erosion of civil rights in the context of the world in which we now live.

Over governed is probably a fair term. But a lot of this arises because of the proverbial bad eggs. Do you think a tax return would take so long to complete if so many people had not attempted to evade tax over the years?

I could go off tap here about this topic but I will refrain from posting anything other than this little sentence.

Look at what has happened in South Africa and Zimbabwe since they handed out civil rights. Not to mention Iraq. I didn't know they had made drug use legal, just because all of the coppers, judges, barristers etc are doing it doesn't mean its legal. All rights and no responsibilities these days.

Can't do what you want in your own home.
Can't camp on the beach.
Can't fish without paying money.
Can't go into the bush for quiet weekend without paying money.
Can't defend yourself or family against a burglar in your own home.
Can't voice your opinion without being sued.
Can't have a beer in the park during a picnic.
Can't drive whatever car or motorbike you like?

Need I go on?

If you were not at least a teenager in the 70s then you have as much idea about life then as you do about the 11th century, that is, none whatsoever other than what you have seen on TV.

There was a time, the '70s when you just got into your panelvan, drove to the pub at the beach, drank a bit, picked up a chick and porked her with no fear of aids, slept the night in the back of the van parked in the rest area at the beach, had a couple of heavies in the morning, went swimmimg or fishing, had a few beers on the beach, met up with the girl again, went to the pub, more beer, midnight swim, more sex, slept in the van, woke up, drove home at whatever speed you felt was safe, then the next day went to work after a normal weekend.

No date rape drugs.
No ethnic gang violence.
No gun crime despite any type of gun being available a K-Mart.
No road rage.
No internet kiddie porn.
No greenie dropkicks complaining about anything to make the news.

Mentally ill people were not roaming the streets.
Murderers and rapists were not on day release.

No mobile phone texting, illiterate, doof doofing, ipod wearing, dropkicks making stupid gang signs while not worrying about their upcoming bankrupcy hearing at the age of 18 due to credit card and telco debt because they have the RIGHT to be a burden on society.

No road rage my ***. My grandfather pioneered it in his FJ Holden before they had a name for it, then the FJ got passed onto my dad. Now my dad, who is 60 years old and retired slams on his brakes and cops a tailgating EA wagon into the back of his 4 month old Yaris.

That last passage is gold Flappist !

The story reminds me of the old Four'N Twenty pie add, the surfer throwing the board in the back of the panel van and head to the local shop for some "hot stuff". :

Great post & so true.

One of the best I've seen on this Forum. The world has changed but I don't think it's for the better.

Flappist I back 100 percent on this. Anyone who thinks they have more rights in this day and age Versus back in the 70s or even upto the late 1980s/1990s has crap for brains.

The rules and regs comming in every day is a joke. Censorship for just about anything. The biggest one John Howard put through is just about communisim. *Media gagging*

Please google Police State you idiots.

Uncle Bastards Reality Check: Society determines our liberties. Society is mainly filled with mindless meat sacks who would rather sue you then help you. It wont get any better, ever. It will only change as society changes. Society is likely to get lazier and stupider.

Forecast is for cretins with scattered thoughts and occasional dribbling.
