Yeah they should use the new one that aquahead2001 mentioned thats in the Land Rovers, the 3.6V8 TDI. I bet they dont though.

Need something to compete with the General. Isnt there talk of a large capacity V8 diesel for the Commodore? Probably just speculation though.

The VM Motori engine that Holden are rumoured to be using makes 180 kw and 500nm. That would make the 2.7 TDV6 pale in comparison as its 140 and 440. If Ford do use that engine it will be underpowered even before its released if Holden use the VM Motori engine. The 3.6 TDV8 is a better proposition at 200 and 620, but the fuel economy is only 11l per 100 in a heavyweight Rangie, which wouldn't be much better than that of a current petrol powered Territory even though the Territory would be a bit lighter. Thens there's the problem of not being able to fit V8's to the Territory, even though a V6 would probably have the same steering shaft clearance problems.
