Though surely it could be argued (both ways) that if you are into cars you are probably more likely to drive faster, more recklessy whatever. Hell why do I (or anyone here) pay all this extra money every year to own a performance car. I just feel that other factors, such as the fact I have never had a claim, perfect record ect ect should be given more weight, than what fast cars I have owned in the past (which incidentally included a list as long as my arm).

After living in NSW near the ACT for almost a year, I had to move from RACV to an insurer that would cover me up here. I obtained a few quotes over the web, none of which came close to the RACV premium, which was around $450/year for a 2005 XR6 ute with exhaust mods. I was 50 at the time with no accidents or convictions. NRMA was over the top (coser to $750 for the same address that RACV covered me for until I had to rebew; and NRNA use the same underwriters as RACV); one other was close behind, but Shannons wouldn't cover me at all !!!!!?????. Went for AAMI, which set me back around $520. Can't wait to get back to VIC where the premium will drop back closer to $450 for the car, which will be located in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Uo here I'm living in a quiet cul de sac in what can only be described as middle class rural NSW.

Hmm, my insurance on my XR8 is due and after reading first page of this thread I thought I'd give Shannons a call after I couldn't use their online quote setup(no XR8 to choose from??). The fella asked me where my XR was parked, I said it was in the carport in front of the shed. He said, "can you see it from the street?" I said, "yes." He said that they wouldn't insure it. I then told him that I will then put it in the shed so I could get insurance. He said bad luck.
I called back and asked for a quote for a '04 XR8 parked in the shed. They weren't interested. I think the best price I got was $1100 for an insured value of $28000 and the youngest driver of 32yrs. From this sour interaction with Shannons, I'm lead to believe that a 6 speed manual Falcon XR8 is something that an enthusiast wouldn't drive or own. Good luck Shannons.

I had my old VX SS insured unlimited mods for under 1K. Went to get a quote on my stock standard second hand BA turbo....$200 MORE
Hmmmm Went elsewhere. Plenty more mod friendly insurance companies these days, at least for older fellas like me.

makes u think when u read these stories, as some have fantastic experiences with shannons, and others terrible ones, with no real "middle" ground stories.
personally, i put 1 of my older cars on limited use with them... fantastic deal ($145 a year.) got cheaper when i put the other older car im currently resto'ing on laid up with them ($95 a year, going to $145 a year when it hits the road). it was cheaper to do this instead of the normal way of just insuring it when it done. the wifes shed-dewelling XR8 and her other daily hack were up for renewal, so i gave them a go... cheaper for both, with more agreed value on the XR8 (premium of $530 a year) and the same agreed on the daily hack (premium of $446 a year). then when all 4 were put on the same policy, the price was to good to let go... believe it or not, but we now pay $1 a month LESS for all 4 than what we paid for just the 2 wifes cars... and when the 1 im restoing is done, that will mean we pay a whoping $3 a month more than before... : : IMHO, shannons are brilliant.

Shannons quoted me $885 for my Xr6, with no mods but agreed value of $24k
Budget Direct has me at $550, with no mods and market value. I'm gonna call Shannons again and see what they can do. |
