Is this actually news to any of us? How many of us have hit servos that well tuned cars seem to ping on their premium? Not picking on Ballina here....I dont think its an isolated issue.
From Ninemsn.... Eleven BP outlets stop selling premium Monday Jul 2 23:06 AEST Eleven BP petrol stations in northern NSW have suspended sales of BP Ultimate brand after a media sting revealed sub-standard fuel was being sold as the premium product. Ballina Petroleum issued a statement saying it regretted the incident and was cooperating with an investigation into the incident. The company cleared BP of any blame. http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=276389

This was only a hand full of BP's owned by the same chap.
He blended 91 with 98RON to get a mixture on average of 94-96RON. Enough to make him a hand full of cents per litre, but the average motorist probably wouldn't have noticed unless they REALLY knew their cars performance. Shame really, they tested a whole lot of other BP's and got the correct 98RON for their "Ultimate" |

Hey Im not trying to tar all stations with the big brush.
I used to have a VX SS tuned right on 98....anything less and the difference was quite noticeable. BP's proved the most consistent for me (in SA). I've had odd issues with BP, Shell, and Mobil over the years. Left certain servos off my love list. My point was I dont think this is just Ballina, others have and will do it, they just dont get sprung..

About 7 years ago an independant servo was busted adding toulene to fuel.
Toulene is already present in unleaded fuel but only a very small %. By adding more toulene fuel it didn't make the engine ping but just lack power. It was about the same time I worked a Honda Dealer and we had customers complaining of a lack of power and we could never fault them.... |

BP ensures BP Ultimate has a minimum octane rating of 98. Other brand PULPs can vary depending on batch.
The fuel mixing scam was an isolated incident orchestrated by the local BP wholesaler. |

Toluene is something like 116 ron! Toluene is a helluva octane booster and would aid in performance. It is extremely combustable and a very cold fuel. |

I get around a few dyno shops and they all say "this time of the year" they notice the octane is taken out during the cooler months....

I found BP fuel really "dirty" for my motorbike. Just coughed and splutted every time I fueled up there, but I think it was because it was a low turn over, privite run BP... not a big one.
Fueled the bikes up at Woolworths the other day and got REALLY bad fuel. Blocked the carbi jets, and had to run the bikes on reserve to burn out the crap that had settled at the bottom of the tank. 95-98RON runs the bikes smoothly. When your talking 250-600CC carbi, you really feel bad fuel compared to a car...
