Gday all
I have a problem with my 1987 KE Laser. The problem is I have a whining noise coming from the front, at first I thought it was the bearings replaced them noise still there. So had a good look under car and noticed that the drivers side CV boot is split in two , could that be making my noise ? And the other thing is where is the filling point for the gearbox ? Any response would be great. Cheers Dash007 |

you would be best to buy a reconditioned CV drive shaft for that drivers side to be sure
gearbox is a guess the speedo is used as a dipstick and filling point on some small manual gearboxes but wait for a laser guru

If the boot is cracked it will have filled with dirt and crap and will almost deffinatly be the source of your problems. I know on the av telstar the fill poin and dipstick on the manual is the speedo cable opening. It is at the rear of the box.
I recently had my LHS driveshaft replaced with a reconditioned on as that is the best option. If you live in Melbourne PM me and I can give you some advice on places that I have had good experiances with. Good luck. |

Thanks guys. I have now replaced the driveshaft and replaced the gearbox oil (there was auto trans fluid in it from the previous owner!) but the noise is still there and getting worse.
I did replace the driveshaft on the passenger side a couple of months ago. Is there any part of that that could be making the noise? I am running out of ideas! |

only the clutch release bearing or gearbox bearings

Tell the missus to get out and you will probably find the whine disappears. You did say any response would be great!

get a second opinion about the box condition
any mechanical workshop or gearbox shop will do if the noise is there and they also confirm that the box requires overhaul then that price is fair and even better if it comes with a warrenty

You are now at the stage where specialty tools and a wealth of automotive knowladge are required, I would not attempt to fix it myself at this stage if i were you because when you do screw up it is a long and expensice tow to the mechanic. I recently had a new 5 speed manual put in my AV TX5, finding a seccond hand box can be a challange because those manual boxes usualy last for eaver if treated right so there is a low demand for them. I got a box that had done something like 40,000 kms fitted for something like $900 but dont quote me on that because i cant remember and there were also other repairs done at the time.
Good luck. |
