Default A few exhaust questions

I'm getting the exhaust fitted next week with comp headers, high flo cat and redback exhaust.

Anywho what muffler and resonator count am I after?? I have listened to a few Falcon OHC sixes on youtube and they can sound very different. Some sound like a fourbanger, some drone, some rattle but some sound awsum like a V8 with that nice deep note.

What have people here done and do they have any sound files??

My parents got an extra resonator fitted on their aftermarket job and you can hardly hear the damn thing.

What do I need to have that nice seep note??

eg. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0tZijf0aqM

The rear resonator is the one that makes the difference, leave it off and it'll be bloody loud and drone like buggery, put it in and depending on how big it is it can be pretty quiet.

On my last 6 I had a 2.5" catback, one muffler and the rear resonator. Sounded good, nice and deep, not droney, but wasnt ridiculously loud either.

Redback and HM tend to be the "deeper" sounding exhaust IMHO.

i have extractors 3 inch collectors hi flow cat and race muffler with a hot dog no reasonator, all 3 inch lukey stuff except for the hot dog unsure about that one it has a deep note and is quite nice when cruising not overly loud but give it a big rev and the pensioners are reaching for their pacemakers, i might stick a reasonator on it later, i don`t think being 3 inch or 2.5 inch has a huge bearing on how loud it is ,more about the type of mufflers imo and with or without reasonator.

isn't hotdog just another name for resonator?

i looked under mar car yesterday and i got 3 mufflers on the stock system.. can't wait to upgrade... which will be soon as i found plenty of holes in my system... but want to do extractors at the same time... anyone got a set they wanna sell? :P

hot dog make more noise or changes the note, reasonator makes less.

I have 3 inch, no res, one straight through 3 inch "race" redback muffler. Its not too loud though, and sounds fine, a little higher pitched than the old lukey, more like a saloon car, just ask any QLD members, they will all have heard mine.

When you order you redback exhaust it should be a Perry ensure you ask the guy to order a center muffler and a rear with a resenator or hotdog in the rear.

This will ensure you will have a great sound with out any boom drone or drumming.

I spoke to my exhaust fitter and he is of the opinion that the Perrys are rubbish.

We'll see how it turns out he's a pretty good exhaust bloke he can even make Ecotecs sound good if you can believe it.

I got pacie comps, high flow cat and 2.5" mANDREL BENT REDBACK about 2 weeks ago

It sounds bloody awesome mate, it sounds a hellova lot deeper, but it is pretty quiet due to the rear resonator.. that is until you give it a bit of get up n go ;)

Maybe it sounds louder from outside tho, cuz i still get all these guys looking around at my car when i drive past

My friends were saying mine sounds like a v8, lol.. I wouldn't go that far.. But it sure does sound good and i dunno if the extractors help the note or anything.. but goddamn.. i am happy with the sound mine makes.

Will prolly get louder over the next couple months i suppose too

Oh and one piece of advice.. don't crap yourself when you drive your car from the place ur getting the work done at when it looks like the engine is smoking.. that'll be some of the paint from ur extractors getting burnt

Lucky the guy at the shop told me that, cuz i woulda crapped myself if i didnt know, lol

i have a mercury muffler and press bent 2.5" cat back with a twin 2.5" chrome tip
the twin tip makes a airy whistley sorta noise due to the way the air has to be split in 2 as it comes out..
im going to be going for a droopy style 3" tip in the near future and a resonator at the back

there is a video file up on the aufalcon.com site of my car doing a few fly bys etc
its VERY loud... and more than likley illegal loud..(never had it measured)
to keep it legal i believe you WILL need a rear resonator
it also drones bad when lightly accelerating (things rattle inside its that droney/loud)
but it sounds good any other time (especially at wide open throttle MWAHAHA!!)

I Used the pacie Comps high flowed the standard cat (2.5 inch in&out) With a 2.5 Inch Mandrel Pipe with staight through main muffler and rear res and bugger me its quite on the inside imean when you hit the rev limiter and wonder what could that be and then see the the tacho needle bouncing around the 6 mark. Also the AU Is Wierd When it comes to mods as i didnt get the performance until a couple of days after i fitted the new exaust ECU had to adjust itself im told.

Pehaps the AU3's are more quiet than the AU1's.

I think they have a different firewall don't they???

Off topic but looking under the car I notice I have an alloy tailshaft! So why the hell am I limited to 190kays????

The only reason i can assume your Exhaust fitter has mentioned this is he will sell you a product that he can make the most profit margin on.

Perry Performance Exhaust Sytems come with the Exhaust industry's best warranty of 5 year on stainless steel and 3 year on Mild steel. If Perry Performance Exhaust systems were rubbish why would they offer the best warranty in the exhaust industry.

I thought that the difference was that a hotdog looks like a frankfurt stuck on the pipe, a resonator looks like a cylinder on the exhaust pipe...

Hotdogs are a type of resonator, maybe that's what you mean?

i have had the following exhausts...

pacie comps, high flow cat, 2 1/2 press bent with 1 muffler = VERY LOUD

pacie comps, high flow cat, 2 1/2 redback with i muffler and 1 resy = awesome note.

now, pacie comps with 3" flange, 3" cat and 3" exhaust. I have 2 straight through mufflers, and its probably a touch quieter than my previous exhaust.
