As above...
Would an e-series diff fit up into an AU? My friend just installed an EB LSD into hes EF...The only thing we had to change was a little section of the brakes, which was nothing anyway! Thanks... |

If you fold the rear seat down you should be able to get it in the boot!
The brakes are different, particularly the parkbrake. Unless your AU has IRS, it will likely fit, but they are a different width, hence different offset wheels. I would expect a diff from the wreckers would be close in price for an AU to an Eseries. Mike

the centre will fit into an AU housing but it would cost more than it was worth to get them changed over as stated the offset is different on the AU that id why pre AU have different wheels so this will have to go into the too hard ( or costly) basket

I'm pretty sure the AU's have the same centres as the E series or atlease EF EL. So in what way would using an E series Diff be downgrading?

im told the diff centres are the same from EB-AU live axle
but IRS has a wierd little groove in it that holds the driveshafts in (its for a circlip) the 4wd systems LOKKAS(used in 4x4s and completly road legal) can be bolted into the stock open center and give more power handling than an LSD does.. but not QUITE the same effect as an LSD(no real slip.. but does open on cornering unlike a minispool or locked diff) they only cost about $500 too!! + fitting an au is just a series 10 EB anyway.. most of the driveline isnt that different good luck mate!

on the other hand
you could possibly run some WICKED dish on the rear hehe but then it depends if it fits next to the suspension and then you are changing track by more than XYZ% that makes it illegal anyway

We'd be swaping the diff's over our selves...Have already done it on an EF!
So in conclusion will an e-series diff fit into an AU1? I know the off set is diffrent, which isn't that big really... |

Short answer is NO it wont fit. The suspension mounting points are different. If you cut the suspension mounts of and re-weld them maybe it will fit. Then the suspension mounts will probably snap as there under a fair bit of load so you'd want to be a good welder to pull it off. In my opinion its to hard and to expensive

car parts evolve often in small ways that may seem insignificant. during the life of a car ways are found to improve things and these are adopted as running changes . what may seem a minor change to you is something that had been identified as an isue by ford. it would be cheaper to make no changes but not good for the evolution of the car itself. using older model parts is downgrading the car and in some cases may be illegal as it may impact on ADRs emmisions or other critical design features. since the BTR was introduced in 1990 there have been a wide range of changes and today BTR bears only some resemblance to the original 1990 model. the borg warner diff was also used in the XP but is nothing like the diff in tadays cars. your statement that It's the same BTR and Borgwarner concept would be like saying an XP falcon is basically the same as an XF as the use the same floor pan/ sub frame and are both falcons . if you sell the car in the futuer and don't tell the new owner you have downgraded it with old inferior parts you open the way for litigation so i would think before i turn the car in to an e series

so blksam
ring up your local ford dealer.. and grill the service technicians and say look how different is the earlier diff center over the AU item?? then you can prove to the world its different or the same.. but for sake of saving money.. just do it.. if it breaks.. it cost you 1/2 the price as by the sound of it you have access to alot of E series parts for a damn good price! good luck dude

The centre is the same, there is no question. If your centre is rooted and you have an e-series one slap it in, no issues. Except gears, I think they were a bit shorter in the early E povo packs
