Hi all,
im new to the escort scene. got a mk1 2door which i am trying to get on the road but I cant get any of the lights to work! no of the indicators, tail lighst or headlights work. i've replaced all the fuses and checked all the globes. I rewired the rear harness as it was a mess (previous owner had towbar and just cut into loom to hook it up) and i know its all good as i used a factory harness and mtached all the colours up. Does the loom need to be earthing at the back by the tailights?? there was no wire for it and the manual i have dones seem to note an earth point anywhere... any suggestions?? much appreciated. check ur earth points, since u said the last rear loom was cut into ther could be other things you dont no,
everyelectrical thing in a car and trailor has an earth, find them and get some sandpaper and wd40 |

first up, get a light tester, turn your parkers on and search your new loom for a pulse, then simply connect your front parker and both taillights to it (all the same circuit) follow this step with blinkers, rev and stop lights. earthing can be done anywhere on the body - u can even earth all lights to the same earth wire. colour coding doesnt mean much cause when i wire up trucks where i work, sometimes even though two might be identical models, they have different colour wiring - a light tester is a better indication of which wire u want. if no pulse in your loom youve wired it up wrong so trace it back from whats left of the original wiring. also check switches. these are just a breaker for that particular circuit. Wiring can get a bit confusing but once u grasp the basics its like a light above your head! Hope this helps.....

The best advice I've ever got from anyone relating to electrics on old pommie Fords was to pay an auto electrican to sort it out. Basically, the electrics are sh!t and its worth paying someone else to sort it out rather than suffer the headaches of sorting them out yourself.

thanks for replies guys.
i decided to have a crack at it following your advice and now have everything working except my low beams. so pretty happy with that. ill just drive during the day : cheers scott. |
