i believe oakleigh sheriffs dept has auctions for cars that are "reclaimed" from fine defaulters and saturdays age used to have the different councils that had their auctions at various times

the workshop my old man works at here in geelong do the pick ups ect of abandoned cars

they have the rights to the car before they get to auction so i am guessing that the cream has been taken of the crop before the public get to see them

My council puts a notice in the paper, not an ad, but like a legal one in the back pages saying due to section xx of act xx etc etc cars will be sold on....

Here abandoned cars are impounded for 3 months before being sold
You can get it out after paying the fine during the 3 months

They range from burnt out wrecks to cars that backpackers have driven here and just left at the airport with the keys in them that run fine. Mostly older stuff but.

I don't think they have the Sheriff Auctions at Oakleigh anymore, read on their site that it has been moved to another auction centre now.

Also, there was a place in Port Melbourne, I think on Plummer Street which auctioned various councils' abandoned cars. Usually old XD - XF, EA - ED and old Commodores, Magnas, etc. Nothing you'd really want anyway, though most can be had for between $50 and $500.

The ad will be in the "Public Notices" section of the newspaper...I've seen them in the Courier Mail as well. As has been said, usually they are crappy cars that you wouldn't give a second (or first) look...cheers Linz.
