Stereo speaker issues...

Hey guys i got a annoying issue with my stereo, i've had a dvd double din stereo in the 'lane for about 18 months and it jsut recently started playing up with the sound ie. it would be tempermental on when it wanted to play sound or the sound would just drop out suddenly.
So i just assumed the head unit was getting worn out or what ever so i bought a new one with digital tv and gps and bluetooth and all the rest of it.

Now just installed it and the same thing is happening, sound decides when to work, when ever i play iPod or cds the sound cuts out again straight away and if the sound does work as soon as i turn it up enought to hear it at any reasonable level it again cuts out.....

My conclusion is there must be stuffed on my wiring to my speakers, but i cant see or think were. The factory wiring to the 6 speakers are still original the only wiring ive done myself is replacing the sub on the parcel shelf and the amp in the boot, but that was done when i put the FIRST h/u in. I can't understand.

It almost sounds like the speakers get overloaded and cut out.... but how??

Fuses are sweet, wiring looks fine, the sub still gets power and still runs just the speakers are useless.

mate.. i can't help with your audio prob, but could you possibly post up a pic of your double din setup in your lane..?

It will be the wiring. I would check the plug in the back of your head. They would have to have spliced this into your wiring loom. Thats where I would be looking first.

i did the install and i have twisted all wires on each other and then soldered them all.... can't be that.

And i dont think its the H/U because both the old one adn the brand newy have teh same issue

aren two of ur solder joins touching?
are the positive/negative wires the same all the way from the speaker to the H/U?

Is there anywhere that the speaker wires may have been rubbing against the body. ie in the door jams or inside the boot. Thats what it sounds to me.

Thermal cutout within the headunit or amp perhaps? Could be caused by a short and the internal amplification circuits overheating...

hey guys thanks for the feedback, the thermal cutout sounds like a more likely problem because when it does decide to work as soon as i turn it up it cuts out straight away, is there a way i can test for that or should i just take the h/u back?

also brad all the soldered joins are wrap in electrical tape so they dont touch or short
getting annoyed... i just want to listen to music haha

Are you still running factory speakers? If so, they have a tendency to separate after a while (like a few years), and this causes them to cut out - only takes one speaker to do this, and you can lose all sound (happened in my old's AU).

You could test for JC's solution pretty easy - get a set of speakers you know are good and hook them up by simply removing the wires from the speakers in the car and plugging them onto the new ones. Crank it up and see what happens.

If that doesn't solve the problem (if it still cuts out), I'd be removing the headunit and amp from the car and bench testing it - hooking up all parts on a workbench or the floor and trying it out. If it still does the same thing out of the car for starters it's probably not speaker wires. Then start replacing parts on the test bench with known good items and see which unit isn't hooked up when the problem stops.

yeah that sounds like a good plan, i got my day off tomorrow so ill pull her apart and hook up some old speakers.... and yea i am still running the standard premium set.

On a lighter note....
I'm replacing most of the bushes on the front susp and putting in a caster/camber kit this week and then off to buy the G6E turbo 19inch wheels to put on next week... so there will be photos soon of it all

I'll give an updated after i've tested it

If it's cutting out when you turn it up (like instantly, not after a while) it's voltage protection, meaning you have a bad/no ground, Double-check all speakers to make sure their contacts aren't touching metal and re-check your wiring, battery negatives and chassis earths.
