The internet is the greatest reflection of what it means to be human. The dangers, the problems, the issues all existed, and were just as relevant then, as they are now. It's just today, the bad guy doesn't need to walk up to your door to get into your home, the bad guy just uses social networking.

On a related issue:

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=1052463

Police are scouring bushland following the disappearance of a young Sydney woman who arranged to meet two men she befriended on Facebook.

Nona Belomesoff, 18, has not been seen since she left her family's home in Cecil Hills, western Sydney, on Wednesday.

One hopes this turns out ok.

Unfortunately the result wasnt good.

Tragic indeed.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2...15/2900251.htm

A man has been charged with murder by police investigating the disappearance of a Sydney teenager this week.

Eighteen-year-old Nona Belomesoff left her Cecils Hill home on Wednesday morning to meet two men she had befriended on Facebook.

Her body has been found in a creek bed near Warminda Oval at Campbelltown in Sydney's south-west.

Detective Russell Oxford says the teenager believed she was going on a trip to work with an animal welfare organisation.

Its not just facebook where people inpersonate others .
My wife when she worked at a bank had this army guy calling her sending flowers he described himself as an officer gave his name and talked about his life .
Some of the other girls checked out the story, he was describing someone who was serving overseas and was married.
Never found out who he was if I did there were a few guys from the Army that wanted to know so they could let this officer know who was impersonating him .

Just another warning for facebook, today there were an absolute heap of people affected by a virus attached to a video attached to a facebook wall post entitles "candid camera, should see this". Apparently if opened it contains a virus and sends to a heap of people in friends lists automatically.

Delete it if you see it, me and the missus got 3 of them today. Didn't open it luckily. I normally would if I hadn;t received a warning as the lass on the video thumbnail looked pretty hot

But, had a person with a Photo of Vanessa Hudgens try to add my 6y/o sister tonight. Lucky I sit with her whilst she uses her profile. But she got all excited. Just shows you how easy it is. .

What the hell is a 6 year old doing on facebook? Seriously! Minimum age to sign up is 13, not 6. It's good to know you monitor her usage, but she shouldn't be on it for you to have to monitor it. Your parents should take action now.

That hunt turned into a found body today. Very sad.

To the OP maybe think about contracting the AHTCC which is the high tech crime team at the AFP. My old landlord works there baiting this kind of scum then nailing them for grooming.

Some good tips from the AHTCC
http://www.ahtcc.gov.au/tech_crimes_...ploitation.htm

My over mothered doe eyed teenage neices are allowed unrestricted access to chat online. One has already been busted by her sister arranging to meet someone she met online but still my sister refuses to regulate or supervise access. Thanks, I'll send your story to her as more evidence the internet is rated PG at minimum. Unfortunately her attitude is it will never happen to us.

this is really scary. I just checked my profile privacy settings and adjusted accordingly! very sad what happened to Nona Belomesoff. Very sad indeed. I remember getting a phone call from a pervert when i was a young teenager and he wanted to "meet up" I shat and didn't know what to do,(being all of about 12 or 13 if you are lucky) he phoned a few times and I had read in the newspaper about it and told the local constabulary but at the time there wasn't much we were able to do about it. Another thing happened recently with the car for sale, we had a scammer try to swindle the car off us via paypal and what not. makes you feel pretty ticked off!

Because she likes to talk to all of her cousins over seas and it's cheaper and easier than making the call everynight ... I believe it's our business what we do at home

You could always try Skype.

Sure beats the old phone!

Skype would be cheaper and safer. Yes, it is your business, I just hope she doesn't end up like that 18 y.o. did. But seriously, your parents need to think really hard about what they're doing - I am a parent, my kids are 5 and 7, and while they have been on a computer, they do not get on the net. There's a saying that goes something like anyone can procreate, but not everyone can parent.
