Default Help wanted for Vehicle Check - Vicroads

Hi guys,

I'm buying an interstate car. I'm from Adelaide and I'm buying an XF in Victoria. I've tried to do the internet check on the Vicroads site, however when I try the rego plate and the VIN it doesn't work saying that I need to call Vic roads. I've tried cars of the same vintage and the same message appears. I got my Missus to ring Vicroads today as I was at work and she gave them the rego plate number and they said it was currently registered but required the VIN to give more information about whether it was stolen, written off etc. She gave them the VIN number but they said it's not the right number. The problem is, XFs are of a vintage where the VIN has less numbers than VINs of today. Is there something I'm missing. Isn't the chassis number the same as the VIN?

What's the rego number? I'll see if it works for me.

This one worked for me, although, some of the other XFs didn't.

Use the rego to do a search on the VR site, if it's not registered nothing will come up.

Pre 89 vehicles had a chassis number not VIN. All VIN's are 17 characters and the search system on the VR prob won't recognise anything that isn't 17 characters or is pre 89.

Most XF's with original rego won't have the chassis number recorded on the system unless it's been through the "pits" after the mid 90's.

I work for VR.

Just call the call centre on 131171.

I used the rego on the website. It directed me to call VR. When my missus called VR, they said yes it was registered but they couldn't give any info re stolen status, writeoff, or encumberence because VIN number didn't come up on the system.

If the chassis number is not recorded on the system, how do I get a vehicle check?

Thanks for trying that mate. I think it's as Force006 says, the ones that come up/recognised are ones that have been over the pits since the '90s.

Get all the numbers and do a REVS check
https://online.revs.nsw.gov.au/revs/public.htm
That should get you what you want...
but you will need Reg/Vin/Eng # for it to work...
and its FREE...

It does work, I just tested it.

Go here and just enter the reg no.

http://www.vehiclestatuscheck.vicroa...icleInput.aspx

Follow the prompts and it will tell you the vin, any finance, if its written off or stolen.

All good guys. I called Vicroads myself today and after explaining, they transferred me to another department. Apparently, a lot of the older cars aren't added to the national database. They confirmed the rego and the VIN/Chassis number. They sent me the certificate via email and and I'm ready to buy the car tomorrow!

Thanks for all the help/suggestions guys.
