I'm going to upgrade my old 7J Hotwires to Minilites and was preparing to go the 14in 7J rims, but a friend told me that there are 50 series R13 tyres around now and actualy make the wheel look bigger. Anyone had experience with these? They are hard to find in Australia, (I did google a Mini place in Adelaide that has Yokohama A539's )for $160 a pop, the local T-Mart said they can get a Sumitomo but they were not a performance tyre, in the UK they use the Fulda brand

185 by 60 by 13 falken tyres are available from bob jane. These make the wheel look big and might be a better size.

215/50x13 or 235/50x13 were easy toget 10 years ago even 205/60x13 are getting hard to get as for 175/50x13 never herd of .Most people are going to 205 /50x15
as long as your car is not to low or has rolled guards. |

175/50R13 will be the tyre size for a Mini - way too small for an Escort (most states limit change in tyre diameter to 15mm). If you are getting new wheels, 15" and 195/50 could be an option as there is a good range of tyres in that size too - I'm not sure if there is a 14" in the same boat.

Try Federal tyres, they're pretty good. good pricing too.
Not sure if this may interest you buy you can get 205/60/13 Advan Ao48's. I've got a set of Dragway 4-Spoke's with them on sitting around doing nothing if you are interested? $250 and they're yours http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s...n/IMG_0258.jpg http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s...n/IMG_0195.jpg

215/50R13 is way undersize - what are you trying to achieve? The gap under your arches will look like a 4WD with that size tyre. And your engine revs will be increasing at all road speeds. I suppose if you are building a dirt track racer they will be OK.

Have threaded collar coil overs all round so can go up or down. I didn't think to much about the rolling radius is there an online calculator around? I have 205/60 Yokohama's now and the top of the tyre is about 10mm from the top of the arch in the guard. I want to increase track width (long wheel studs and spacer plate) without the deep dish 7in Superlights/Hotwires have(engineer said I can't increase track with by more than 25mm but if I don't have deep dish wheel it won't look like I have increased track nudge nudge wink wink). The difference between 50 and 60 series should only be 10mm.I'll dig up an old pic of her and post it up. |

Using spacers on longer studs is a dangerous proposition at the best of times. This set up relies on the studs to support the vehicles weight and cornering loads; when your wheel is flush mounted to the hub the protrusion from the hub centre carries this load, the studs are merely to hold the wheel on this protrusion - this is why it is critical to ensure correct fitment of after market wheels (and the flush of hub-centric rings on the market.....)
Some hub spacers try to address this by incorporating a hub centre protrusion; but still does raise some concerns regarding stud stress loading. This should be the course of last resort, and realistically should not be pursued given that the presence of spacers will render your vehicle as unroadworthy and will void insurance - I'm sure the Coroner would tend to take a rather dim view on this practice as well.... For the front best get onto someone like Smka (Escort/Capri specialist) and pick up some new wide offset hubs - if the Group4 +10mm ($130) increase is not enough he could possibly source you something a little more agressive. Rear - best option would be an upgrade to full floating axles with required offset changes incorporated in the new hubs... At the end of the day its your life, you will choose what course best suits your needs - this post is just to identify some of the pitfalls of using the long stud/spacer option and offer up alternate solutions. I tried 185x60 many years ago on 13x6 inch rims, very small, big changes to rolling dia, if you are going to go a deep dish wheel, say 13x7 you will need to at least get a 195 / 205 x50 |
