Hey guys, well its crunch time.. It looks like i'll have to change jobs both of my bosses (i work two jobs) have decided to cut my shifts back. Job A i'm now getting less than 9 hours a week, job B is seasonal and we don't start back full time till December (it finished in july).
I'm thinking about changing my career altogether and would love to be in around cars a bit more, but not quite sure how to go about it. I've had no training in the area but have a huge interest (and love) of all things automotive. I do have experience in cash handling and customer service (after all i am a checkout chick!!) and my other job, well lets just say the skills i have from there aren't really transferable, accept the team work component! Any suggestions on what I should do and where to start looking would be fanatastic guys! Cheers Melz

My mates son 19ys just started at an autobarn type store 6 months ago. His pevious motor knowledge was limited to being shown how to tune his dads old car and replace the front pads. However he loved cars and told the manager that.
He got the job, starting at the basic sweeping, restocking and stuff. After one month he started hunting for parts for customers as well as ordering the cutomers parts ( Got a few crazy returns on his orders eg. he ordered 5000 cable ties as they were runnin low. When they turned up(Much to his surprise) he got 5000 muti cable kits with 1000 assrted ties in them. Boss was a bit miffed, at least they can probably sell them ok! He's still there after 6 months and going strong. His car and parts knowledge have inproved heaps as well. Good Luck All in all show what experience you have (if any) Don't lie. ;) |

You can become a Parts Interpreter! My brother works for Toyota as a Parts Interpreter and recently won a trip to Japan thru a competition Toyota held by trade tests for the job.
You need Parts Interpreters because Toyota Parts only speak Japanese and of course that's no good in Australia (except the suburb he works in, in Sydney, where he is the only person who doesn't speak Japanese). :monkes: Seriously, the job is in dealing with both customers and mechanics, with the control and sales of Spare Parts. The people he works with are fantastic. Tim |

Sounds like any of the jobs listed you could go for. The best bit is the cheap parts you can get : .

Not the greatest pay though. There is a TAFE course you can do here in NSW to become a spare parts interpreter. It's interesting that's for sure. The guys who did it where I worked were really good and quick

Maybe you should just present yourself and a resume to a few of the local dealerships and if they cant help maybe they know someone that can.

I wouldn't mind being a spare parts interpreter, had a mate who did that for a while. Gonna try the local Autopro, Repco and Autobarn..I wouldn't be any good as a detailer, i take too long

Why don't you just stick with casual/part time work and try and get some TAFE/Uni in on the side for what you'd like to do...of course once you work that out.

Either that or a courier driver ... can earn decent money delivering. Just don't deliver pizza ... it's a crap job and you get paid crap as well. I used to do it.
