Flooded parts - can they be saved ??

Ive got/had parts stored at my brothers workshop at rocklea in brisbane.
The workshop got about 4 metres of water through it and everything is covered in mud n silt and god knows what else. Its a hell of a clean up job.

The least of my concerns at the moment but i thought id ask peoples opinions

parts are from a stock xr6 turbo

Turbo
complete intake manifold with throttle body
exhaust manifold & dump pipe
complete exhaust system
intercooler

all the piping and airbox should be fine.
The turbo i expect to be a throw away
exhaust manifold and dump pipe will be fine i assume.

The exhaust system -- whats ya thoughts ?
It will be thoroughly rinsed out with clean water but i would expect the mufflers and cat to be a problem.

The exhaust will definitely be a throw away, as you will never get all the silt out of the fibreglass packing in the mufflers. You could just cut the mufflers out and keep the pipes though.

The turbo should be OK though, just need to be stripped, cleaned and replace bearings..

As it's been said, the turbo should have a rebuild, but the pipes and mufflers are easily enough replaced. Throw them out.
It'll be interesting to see what pops up on eBay in the next few months from up in flood affected area's and how badly damaged they are.

Some throttle body cleaner will do some good on all bits. Turbo will need to be dismantled to asses damage however another build (inc bearings etc) of the turbo will more than likely be needed.

The exhaust needs to be filed under B

To overhaul one of these turbo's would nearly cost as much as new one..
They have seals etc in them which hold 60+ Lb oil pressure at 1200*+ with all the exhaust rubbish.. I would just disassemble both turbine / compressor housings carefully spray with WD40 etc wipe clean or blow out with compressed air..
If the silt hasn't dried out yet it's usually easy to clean out with fresh water...
That's if what ever your cleaning can take water !!!
Add some fresh oil to the CRA before use...

my brother bought a VC Valiant (1967) that had been submerged in the Nyngan floods in the early 90s. i pulled the heads off and cleaned out the gunk in the cylinders and cleaned everything in the engine and it fired up and ran for 4 more years. it was still going when he sold it. we just replaced anything that could be affected by water, eg filters, etc.
there was a watermark inside the car... at the top of the windows (permanently marked the headliner running down the rear pillar)

Same thing happened here after the Newcastle floods a few years back. The insurance companies banded togather and held a auction of all the damaged vehicles near the docks. They sold plenty.
