Ok, I'm going to take the plunge and fit new vinyl stripes to my MK1 Capri GT3000. Still in nice new paint but needs something extra to define the lines and character.
So...I'm after peoples experiences, tips and traps etc to make this job as stressless as possible (because you only get one chance to fit). Thanks Allan |

Here is a diagram that may help
The main thing you have to keep in mind is to make sure that the surface is clean & free from wax. I use Wax & Grease remover. Apply with a soaking wet rag & dry immedeatly with a clean dry rag. Then make sure no dust or lint from the rag is on the surface. I then wipe with a tack rag to make sure. There are two main ways to apply the stickers. Dry & Wet. I reccomend for a beginner to do it wet. This way the sticker does not stick permenantly until the water is dry from behind it. This will give you a second chance to position it if its not in the right spot To do it wet you will need a spray bottle and appilcation fluid which can be made easily by using a good quality dishwashing detergent & use about half a teaspoon per litre. Its consistancy should be just enough to stop the water from beading when sprayed on glass. It doenst have to be exact but the more soap the less the sticker will stick initially which can make it difficult. If the stripes have application paper on them make sure the water has completely dried out before removing or it will want to pull the sticker off aswell, so be paitient & even leave it overnight if you have to. If there are any bubbles you can pop them with a pin & also with using an application fluid the smaller bubbles will dry out after a little while if you get any. One other thing is if you need to trim the stripe make sure you have a sharp knife. One last tip is use some masking tape to position the stripes so you can see where they will go & you can also check to make sure they fit this way aswell. dot rush it & be patient & you will be fine. Make sure you show us some pics when your done. PS, if your in Sydney area I may be able to help you if you want. |

Wet application is the way to go, as it gives you an opportunity to make adjustments. And a helping hand to eyeball everything and assist in placing them on the car also helps. It's better if this person is not someone who is easily frustrated or doesn't listen to instruction.

Wet application is fine if you have modern stripe kit, if you have the original Ford stripes it is not possible to do it that way.
If using the original stripes, try using sticky tape above and below all along the car to guide you where to lay the stripes, this will assist to keep you on as straight a line as possible. As long as you are patient and have a steady hand they should be OK, otherwise pay a professional to have it done, most spray painters and panel beaters would know of a pin striper in their area. Good luck.

Thanks everyone....some good knowledge here.
I think he material is a 3M product '5000' something or rather. Laser cut with heavy backing piece and slightly tacky oversheet for use when fitting. (peel backing, stick en on, remove guide/stability front cover). Can't be as hard as the headlining 'challenge'.........surely. |
