i think my auto trans is dying on me, and i'm wondering what sort of cost i'm up for, to have it replaced. either 2nd hand, or a reco unit.
thanks for any info you can give. my car is an au series1, if that matters. |

Couldn't help you on the price of a reco box but what is the reason that makes you think the box is on it's way out there are prently of easy fix soloutions to problems that could resemble a worn gearbox such as low fluild or dirty fluid or filter.

I was quoted $2500-$3000 for a full rebuild. Perth prices though. A 'good' second hand box I was quoted $500 (plus fitting).

thaks guys.
the trans wont lock up the TC in 4th under any load, but is always locked up when i'm off the throttle (in 4th) causing very annoying issues when coasting down hills. it slips into an 'angel gear' on gentle, cold take offs before lurching into a wound up, tyre chirpling, low throttle % take off, the last 3 days, and it hates to kick down, very severe (no feeling of slip/easing into the lower gear) fluid is full, and actually in decent nick(certainly not browning, or smelling too bad suprisingly) i thought for a while that it was a computer issue, as it's had the reverse TC issue in 4th, for ages, but the take off issues have me almost certain it's hardware related. thanks again for any more help. |

about 20k. when i got the car it was doing the 4th gear thing, so i replaced fluid first, didnt fix it, but apart from being rough on downshifts, (also when slowing down to a stop- the 3-2, 2-1 shifts can be abrupt, only 1 out of 20 times or so)
filter, i don't know. the shop just did a fluid replace, as far as i remember. |

i'd get it serviced. the issues you are having when cold sound like low fluid. get them to do a full fluid flush, new filter and check all the solenoids. it sounds like its still got some life left in it yet. how many k's on the car?

Did you see how they did it?
They should have taken the the sump off of the Auto and then staring them in the face is a filter!

Had mine done a few years ago, full reco was 2k from APS with 3 year warranty. Does it play up only when hot/cold?

Fluidrive in Coburg quoted me 1.8 thereabouts a few years back, for a reco exchange unit.
Dino is a good guy too, really knows transmissions and takes the time to explain things properly. If mine needs work, he's the only place I go. GK

exchange would be pull yours, put in an exchange one and then send your old one back to the exchange place. the only problem is you may get stung if yours has busted bits and is in bad condition for an exchange unit. the price difference would come down to labour costs, stripping and refitting all of yours versus just changing the unit over. exchange ones are still reco, but because the exchange places don't have to remove and refit to the car it is cheaper. otoh, for 2.5k you could almost get a built one these days.... |

Thanks again guys. It hasn't slipped or done anything weird since I posted. Still severe on accel downshifts and won't lock the tc in 4th. Any ideas on what that could be. It does lock when coasting and once below 1700rpm will downshift to 3rd

What speeds do you normally travel at? I know that my converter doesn't lock if i have the A/C on and travelling under 70, if the A/C is off it's normal. Not sure if that's what it's meant to do but its never bothered me.

was quoted $1800, $1900 OR $2000 with 1, 2 and 3 year warranties respectively from a place in Vic last week. Price variance was due to the parts used to rebuild, going from 'ok', to 'moderate' to 'genuine ford'.
