They wanna replace the 3.9 with a 4.0 out of a car with a 4sp auto.

Youll need a 6 bolt flywheel and clutch kit to suit as the EA only has a 3 bolt flywheel.

I think its two cars currently running 3.9 one being a manual and one being an auto. The two mates are considering changing the 3.9's to 4.0's and this fellow is asking if there are any known problems.
I think we need to be careful about behaviours that make new members feel unwelcome or alienate them from this site, now can someone with experience of this conversion advise this fellow?

I have not done the conversion, but with EA's approaching 23 years of age you wouldnt do it on the basis of economics? But if you can do the work yourself and the parts are cheap the MPFI 4.0 is superior to the CFI 3.9

Didn't the EB II 4.0 have a different bell housing bolt pattern?

IIRC, the ECU had the auto trans module included where as the
trans module was separate on EA and EB I

Why would he need an auto trans module when its going into a 5 speed?

The motor will swap straight over. The bellhousings and flywheels will all fit fine.

This is wrong. The 3 bolt flywheel will fit the later model, just use the original clutch.

The 3 and 6 bolt thing relates to how many bolts the clutch uses to bolt to the flywheel, not how many bolts the flywheel uses to bolt to the engine.

I've still got a 3 bolt flywheel / clutch in my EA. And you say the 4 litre is coming out of an NA? Considering an NA is the Fairlane equivalent to the EA, it should have a 3.9 litre anyway! Any EBII-EL 4 litre will bolt straight in. AU will bolt in if you grind fins off the front of the sump.

You didn't read the opening post, car 1 was a 5-speed manual and the other is a 4-speed auto.

EB-AU has a different bell housing bolt pattern to EA..
Back in 1998, we ran into this problem trying to put a 4.0 into my brother in law's EA.

He is only swapping the 4 litre motor over from what I can comprehend. If you only swap the motors over nothing has to be changed for the transmission.

EA-EL is the same. AU onwards is different. The only difference is the lower 2 bolt holes. Many just do without those 2 bolts. They are only small.

1998 was a long time ago, maybe you are thinking of something else.

We got the engine out of a wreck, I'm wondering if it was one of those EL-AU hybrid
things when the Factory was changing over stuff. Anyway, we swapped it for another
OHC and the second one went in fine...

Sorry about the mix up I thought it was two mates wanting to swap 4.0s into both their cars...

There must be something wrong with me. I made more sense out of that than the original post.
