A mate is in need of one of these and I am going to get one to have on the shelf for the day mine needs replacing. Since I will be ordering and getting some sent from the states I thought I would see if anybody else needs one and we may be able to do a little better on freight.
I checked the price this afternoon and for the unit itself it is around $28AU - this is Dorman part, not a Motorcraft one but same thing just different companies. Freight for 2 of them ended up around $55 AU. If you're interested please let me know -no promises on organising anything but it is worth looking at.

How would one know if this part was needed, from what I have read the AU XR8's suffer from this, mine is at 55,000klms but I have not had any drama's what so ever but if it is a common problem I would like to be ontop of it ?.

I know of a car that had one fail with less klms than yours. At the price, you would be silly not to have one on the shelf. I've already got mine. They are only about $700 from Ford here

Thanks for all the interest, just waiting on them to get back to me now with a revised freight cost.
I am also looking at getting an IAT (Intake air Temp) sensorif anybody else is interested in these parts too. The IAT goes for about $9 and is the sensor about halfway between throttle body and MAF and is NLA from Ford here. They dont cope too well if they fall out of the intake pipe and land on the headers so for $9 I'm going to have one spare in the shed. Once Rock get back to me with some freight figures will do some sums and see if it is going to be any more cost effective for all of us to buy in one big order.

I would be interested in 1 synchroniser and 1 IAT. It is always handy to have a spare.
I recently replaced mine and it was a fairly simple process. The Dorman part I bought from rockauto comes with a positioning tool and sensor as well. Let me know |

The squealing when cold is the first symptom. Due to poor design, not enough oil gets to the bush and it eventually flogs out, with the result that the shaft can wobble around. When it gets this bad, it causes a "miss" because the shaft fouls the magnetic sensor in the black plastic cap.
If you know how to remove/re-install a distributor, this is easy, you don't even really need the alignment tool, as you can do it by sight. Just get the engine to TDC on #1 then take the plastic cap off next and observe where the gap in the centre shaft is sitting and re-install the new one to the same position

Got the reply back from RockAuto today and unfortunately since they dont actually organise their own shipping quotes (FedEx does it for them apparently) we can't move on the freight prices.
To give you an idea though I did a quick order for 10 units @ 27.74 each (changes with the AU$ obviously) to be sent to my address and the freight came up as $76.38. So the total would be $277.40 + $76.38 = $353.78 and works out to be AU $35.37 per unit - then Aus Post from me to you wherever you are here. I would think being a bigger unit postage should be in the order of $10-15 per unit so all up you would be looking at around $50 to your door. If there's still enough interest I will do it but if that's getting a little steep for people then you might be best to order your own. See how we go.
