After a little bit of fun at winton raceway for the fun day, on my last session i noticed my brakes were getting really 'spongy'. After the session and pulling in a little exclamation mark appeared on my cluster (!). so i switched it off and let it cool down.
This morning, when i started the car, still had the (!), so i gave the brakes a few good pumps, which made the (!) disappear but my brakes are still 'spongy' Can anyone give me an idea what this might be, air in the lines? needs new fluid? etc etc my definition of spongy: having to push the brake pedal in really far with not much braking occurring Really need a manual for the track, the brakes get a fair workout!

I'd say that you boiled the brake fluid at some point and gotten air in the master cylinder and lines i'd give the brakes a good bleed and check all the lines for any cracks and swelling. And then see if the (!) light still comes on also how much is left on you brake pads ??

the light doesnt come on any more but they are still spongy, pads still seem to be ok so might have to bleed them as you say, cheers mate

As FORD FALCON XR6 has mentioned. The brake fluid has probably been boiled. So if you're bleeding them and planning on some more track days, put a high temp brake fluid in, rather than the normal run of the mill stuff.

I recently had the same thing happen, although not on the track. Turns out one of my rear pads was sticking and the brake fluid boiled. Scary thing pushing the brake pedal all the way to the floor and nothing happening.
Is there any consequence to boiling the brake fluid (apart from loss of stopping power)? I mean, does it degrade the fluid or will it damage the braking system?
