Big fail on my part really, beautiful day so decided to take the hound out to the river mouth for a swim etc, went the back way which after some nice twisty bits there's a huge straight, all good and with the only traffic being a car way down the straight on my side of the road i depressed the loud pedal and let the ute stretch its legs still all good then with the car ahead getting bigger (though still a fair way off) the mrs squeals with delight "look at all the little Lambs" i look left remark "yep springs here" or similar then look back ahead and bugger me said car ahead of me was had come to a complete stop,no brake lights indication nothing,i realized there's no way i was going to stop in time so went round the little green Suzuki or similar heart going 20 to the dozen ,looked across at the mrs and her face was ashen white,it was very very close and when i think about it the old ticker still starts working overtime.Whilst it was a stupid place to just stop i fully realize if we had have hit the car it would have been my fault entirely.Would have been a particularly nasty crash and hate to think what the outcome would have been for those in the small car.As a lifelong motorcyclist Ive always made a point of making a point of paying attention.Very lucky and thankful i managed to avoid the crash.Point of the thread?Nothing more than to remind everyone to pay attention i think.

Sometimes it is good to get a scare to bring our confidence back into reality. A lot better than a crash, I had a close one myself a few weeks ago driving a little too confidently and just about side swiped a concreate wall.
Good wake up call. |

stupid place to stop?
you could just as well say you were stupid to accelerate hard & speed whilst looking at little lambs, to the point where you nearly caused a major accident? |

ummm....I think that is what he said and the point of the whole thread.
Sometime it takes a scare like this to realise that we are mortal and that you need to be on it 100% when driving.

I've nearly smashed into the rear of another car twice on the freeway, particularily when you're in the left lane which is stopped, the right lane is flowing fine, I'm looking in my mirror, looking in front, looking in the mirror, crawling along in first gear, looking at the mirror, looking in front, crawling along first gear, look in mirror:
THERE IS A GAP! I go for the gap, i accelerate and turn into the lane, just missing the rear drivers side of the car in front of me because when I decided to go, they've all stopped in front of me and I was busy looking in the mirror. Damn peak hour traffic and damn my driving skills. |

what it reads to me is: " miles of straight crystal clear open road ahead of me, so i responsibly put my foot down, then turn my head for a split second, and this stupid suzuki was sitting in the middle of the road without any warning whatsoever..... thank god i have good reflexes." |

i am sure that it was all the lambs fault ... maybe you can sue the farmer for distraction.
only joking mate. i understand exactly what your saying and have to remind myself sometimes to stay focused on the job at hand. its easy to be distracted by something for a second and the whole world in front of you can change in that second. i had a closer then wanted incident a couple of months ago in the bosses work ute was merrilly driving up the highway behind a small truck at the front of a line of traffic. as we approched a side road a car pulled out infront of the truck only to discover that there was a push bike rider in the lane infront and so the car had to hit the brakes, the truck driver jumped on his brakes and by the time i seen what was happening and hit the brakes i almost stopped before hitting the back of the truck. the grey nomads behind avoided hitting me by heading offroad in their prado and caravan and coming up the left hand side through the grass. the asian tourist on his pushbike had no idea how close he came to not making it home. .

Yes it can scare the bejesus out of you,i had grandkids in car and always drive a bit slower with them along so sitting at stop sign i look right look left and quick glance to right, nice gap go . christalmighty hard on brakes ive just pulled straight out in front of a car on my side,he manages to duck around me swearing at me while i mouth sorry to him and my heart is going so hard i cant believe i just did to someone what i hate other morons doing, god im one of them,i ride my Harley every few days and am always telling mates to remember that person who you see at next corner will surely do something stupid so stay alert and be ready, and here i sit at computer typing about another silly idiot (me)
we just need to be alert and make sure every second behind the wheel or on a bike.

Not sure if it will still be there, but we had soem testing down at Philip island the other day, and if there is a purple VE ute there that a guy had an accident in, and that sure puts things into perspective, I hope they have it on display at the V8 supercar round

Something that you can't avoid sadly, people are always gonna get distracted at some point. I do it from time to time in traffic as it bores the hell out of me.
