I will just order mine separately as by the time you forward the units on it will most likely end up more expensive.
It was a good idea though. |

I'm still happy for two of them(Cam Synchronisers) through you mate. PM details when you are ready. Also do you want a list to make it easier? I'll start one with the guys that confirmed after post 28.

Honestly I think it going to be more trouble than it is worth and it defeats the purpose of a group buy if the overall cost is going to be dearer than what it is should you order it yourself. Rockauto wont budge on freight prices so it is going to work out a lot more expensive.
If someone else wants to organise this I'm all for it but as it is I have had to order 3 of these today (1 is mine, other 2 are for mates) as one mate is in urgent need of one.

For reference RockAuto does accept Mastercard and they do deliver to PO Boxes (well thats where mine is being sent anyway). I ordered 3x Camshaft Synchronisers, an Intake Air Temp Sensor and a Throttle Position Sensor for myself so I will have those 3 parts on the shelf should they ever be needed. The part numbers are: DORMAN 689-101 for the Synchroniser STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS TH157T Throttle Position Sensor STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS AX31 Intake Air Temp Sensor The catalog to look up parts is the 1999 FORD EXPLORER 5.0 V8 302 cid - NOT ALL PARTS FIT OUR ENGINES so beware before ordering.

you should get a crank angle sensor aswell I did when i ordered all the other stuff mine was worn so when i changed the balancer on my car it ran like crap then put a new crank angle sensor on and heaps better also better throttle response.

Would anyone happen to have a cam synchroniser spare that they'd be willing to sell? The XR8 is a beached whale in the driveway in the moment :(

Guys,
You can repair the old synchroniser to get you out of trouble. A lot of the squealing noise is just caused by varnish deposits on the shaft/bearing and it running dry because of the poor design. It seams it was only designed to last approx ten years as thats when they all start to play up. You can remove the synchroniser, tap out the coil pins, knock the pinions of the taper and then clean the shaft and bearing. (In most cases there is not to much wear as you normally take some corrective action sooner than later before any damage is done to the bearing surfaces). Then re-lube and put it back together. I replaced mine with the Dorman one from RockAuto over three years ago, no problems. Thats when I pulled the old one apart cleaned it up and there was no discernable wear on the shaft/bearing so its now the spare sitting on the shelf for the future if required. |

All back together today, oiled the shaft from the top and bottom, didn't knock out the oil pump drive.
What's the consensus: I ran it without the sensor connected and it seems to run better. Feels faster, sounds meaner, and has some good rumble when you lift off. Has anyone else found this? The difference is bugger all, but I can feel it...

Good to hear it worked out Iron. Had the codes read about a month ago and a cam sync error came out. It was squealing too so I replaced it but kept the original sensor. Noticed it was filthy around the magnet so cleaned it up. Not sure if it's all in the head but it's idling better and feels like it's going harder down low. Did you reset the computer?

There's a definate difference with the sensor disconnected - when you give it a stab in neutral it sounds like it hesitates for a second before revving up, as opposed to the revvs picking up instantly when the sensor is hooked up. When you de-celerate it sounds a bit more rumbly, and occasionally gets a little pop or crackle... didn't do that with the sensor on. But most of all when you really wring it right out to the red, she feels so much stronger through the last 1500rpm than with the sensor on. Pulls harder. As for resetting the computer... i'm going for an exhaust in a week or two so I might just wait till after that.
