Rent Assistance

Looking at moving out of home early next year and was wondering about Rent Assistance from Centrelink...

Rent prices here are ridiculous, and with my current weekly wage, it wouldn't be worth moving out.

I'm not looking at share renting, simply because I'd be moving in with total strangers and I wouldn't know what their temprament is.

I clear $480 a week, minus $80 odd for ute repayment.

I said that when I got this job, that I'd never deal with Centrelink again, but because of rental costs, they are coming into the picture.

Do you think they'd give me Rent Assistance?

I looked in to this, and basically, the answer is no. It seems to me that you've already got to be on some form of dole (old age pension, austudy, abstudy, newstart, whatever) before they'll give you rent assistance. And if you're working, you can;t get that stuff, so you're rooted.

Share housing can work, if you're sharing with the right amount of hot chicks.

What's rent on a small house like up there these days?

Well, a two bedroom house starts from around $250 a week, and that would be for a rundown Queenslander in the outskirts of Nambour.

Units start from $180 a week. There are cheaper, but you don't know what condition they're in until you see it.

I think rent assistance is means tested. If you are earning that much - no chance of govt help.

And why not live with other people? Seems to me mate if you really wanna move out but cant afford to do it on your own - sharing is your only option?

Got it in one... either kill yourslef paying rent in a place or get a friend or two (maybe there's a better/other half in your life?) and move in with em.

Forget about commonwealth assistance on that wage... unless you have kids maybe...

Yeah, I know about sharing. Actually... I have a plan for that, but don't wanna put it into effect until other avenues have been exhausted.

It's not too hard mate, there's usually plenty of young ladies looking for housemates to share accommodation.

As long as you're clean & tidy, they'll snap you up, especially seeing as how you are earning a quid & have a job.

I moved in with one of my sister's workmates when I moved out & it was great.
I saved good $$$$$'s as all expenses were halved, made things much easier.

Go for it!! An advert in the paper will get you started.

The added benefits of going out places with them, their friends coming over are all top bonuses!

quick tip . slightly off topic . but do not move in with a friend . i did . end of friendship. then i moved in with a couple ( girl and boy) . best thing i ever did . when i was young. do not break the rules . (eyes and hands off) they will leave you alone and you will make friends through them . that way you play away from home . home is for security and rest.stay away from swingers though . go for interviews 1st and make your intentions clear . once you get settled thye girl will invite her friends over and you will be sailin.

Hi,

If you know anyone that works in the local hospitals on the coast, they have noticeboards in lunchrooms and you will find that a lot of hospital staff look for share accommodation.

I worked at Buderim and there was always ads looking for someone to share with.

Just a thought.

Thanks for that, I know of some people here who work in local hospitals, might get them to have a look for me.

learn to cook while you are still at home. Girls will love to share with a guy that can cook. It doesnt have to be fancy stuff, but its sure to win them over. Good for getting girlfriends too. I tell all the young blokes i work with to learn to cook and they have all come back and said that it definately helped them score.

Sharing is the best way ... and mentioned before ... don't move in with friends ... it can/will ruin a good friendship. Best to move in with someone you don't know ... and definitely go through the interview process so you know what they are like as well as them trying to figure you out as well.

Leatn to cook definitely ... saves you a lot of money in the long run ... it's cheaper to cook at home than go out all of the time ... especially if you are watching your budget closely.

I'm definately in here. You learn how to cook quickly with a mother who's a qualified chef.

And I'm not one of the blokes who'll say that someone's elses cooking tastes like crap because it's not how mother makes it. Everyone deserves a fair go.

If you cant afford to move out dont. If you have a roof over your head but your not happy there why expect someone else to pay for you to move out.

Im about to move out with my mate and his missus and rent is about $35o-$45o a week, the lower is for a new 3 bedroom house unit thing that's really small and the later is for a near new 4 bedroom house which is massive. As long as it's got a 2 car garage and a kitchen for his missus we'll be right.

By cooking, I mean preparation and frying/boiling/whatever else.

And I can also do the microwave thing no problem.
