Default 250 Crossflow shedding flexplate

Hi guys,

Just signed upto this site and there's some good info & people here.
I have a 250 crossflow in my TD cortina that i have just finnished installing a cam, ignition and a few other bits and pieces into.

i've taken it for a few straps around the block and i'm pretty happy with the motor. however i have a problem with the flexplate comeing loose from the crank when i'm in the high rpm bracket.
i have put on a new harmonic balancer on, torqured up the flex plate bolts and gave it a drive, and about 10 k's later...loose.

i took the BW35 trans off, took out the bolts, cleaned them and the threads in the crank, primed+loctite re-torqued and tried again......
quick drive later all is good, untill i gave it a hard punch and as soon as she got high in the revs, loose again.

got new bolts, strongest loctite available and used retaining compound behind the flexplate, loose again after a drive.

anyone else had this problem and more importantly to me.....found a soloution?

welcome to the forums,

what tension are you torquing the flexplate bolts up to?

is there a round locking plate that fits onto the flexplate, that the bolts go through?
it sits on the transmission side of the flexplate, (it has 6 bolt holes in it)

might be worth looking for some ARP bolts to suit it, are they 7/16 UNF?
some windsor/cleveland ones may fit?

Is the bottom end stock? ,Crossflows don't like to be reved past 6k stock, bad harmonics.
What rpm's are you getting it to?. Are you throwing fan belts as well?
loctite has always worked for me in the past, I wouldn't put a flex plate on a crossflow without it.

im torquing up the bolts to 95ft/lbs
no there is not a round locking plate that i have ever seen.
i'll have a look at the arp bolts, cheers, yes they are 7/16 UNF.

the bottom end was built by the previous owner, he has spent a fair bit of money on it though, it has shot peened rods, flat top pistons, high volume oil pump, and some other goodies.

i found a tub of loctite 272 in the shed, thats a higher temp one from memory...... ill throw that in there with another set of bolts, i found some grade 8 ones, hopefully that might do the trick

hi guys, think i have got it sorted now.
the loctite plus some lock washers and crush washers seems to have fixed it.
took her upto 7.5k rpm a few times on the deck, has'nt moved yet.

all i need now is a better transmission and i can start driving further 1 block again

its only a CT142637 from camtech at the moment i will go for a bigger one later on mabey an ivan thige.


if you where curious, still running cast iron head, rollers, 650cfm, ect
