MY06 V8 Holdens will have the L76 6.0L engine, Euro III compliant of course. They will deliver a peak of 260kW and 510Nm. All V8 variants in MY06 will have the same specifications, as opposed to the current arrangements with staggered outputs.

Chairman and Managing Director Denny Mooney announced this to a group of journalists in Sydney yesterday. As HSV has been saying, LS2 will remain the exclusive domain of HSV.

This will obviously spark a fresh round of threads but please appreciate there is more information to come in the next few weeks.

The engine will have DOD but the gearbox will remain the 4 speed auto. The 6 speed will be introduced later (before VE).

Well done Holden. Lets think about this pragmatically.
If Holden put a high output motor into their cars, Ford will find a way of at least coming close, if not matching them. The standard V8 for ford may become a version of the 260 boss motor, the power output of the performance v8's would be increased thusly as well. On top of that, Ford are likely to retain exclusivity of the zf6 due to Holden having their development budget of the VE cut by 500 million, resulting in a likely GM6 speed box that will not be as advanced as the German. (refer to BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar etc for development). The GM6 box will cost significantly less than the zf6 which will help Holden's bottom line.

When the VE is introduced, Ford are likely to have a corresponding BF2 which is a car essentially at the end of its lifecycle; meaning Ford will throw all of the fruit (better interiors, engine outputs etc) at it due to lower production costs and a lesser need to depreciate the equipment like presses and dies used to make BA anyway.

Holden will be at the opposite end of this lifecycle, and will have to be fairly rigid with pricing as they will have huge dividends to pay to GM for the development budget, as well as higher rates of depreciation on capital equipment used to manufacture the cars. For this reason the new series cars overall are less generous with equipment and refinement, allowing for further upgrades and improvement on the VE platform in later models when the companies expenses on that model are naturally reduced. An example is how the BA interiors looked a little cheap on the high end models, but now have been embellished with different materials, or how DSC and other expensive technology finds its way into the vehicle at around the halfway point of its lifecycle. This works in two ways, to keep interest in the product as well as enable little price adjustments due to growing margins of the product verses receding costs.

A long winded way to say that the last of the series always ends up being better value for money, but personal depreciation of the asset is higher due to a newer version being available.

Holden have some tough road ahead of them, as do ford - and the way that these two companies differentiate themselves will be based solely on which manufacturer can woo the public more. So far, with their expensive marketing campaigns Holden are winning, but Ford will make up ground. The more powerful engines thang is designed for wow factor in the showrooms, much the same as the ZF6 speed is wooing people in Ford showrooms.

they didnt even make their own 300kW genIIIs either, the motors were built in the states and shipped here!!!
Holden has been the shining star in GM, they are now regarded as GM’s research and development centre, for medium to large RWD cars. Holden also has GM’s 3rd largest design facility and one of the best engine building facility.

True the V8 comes from GMNA, theres nothing wrong with that, its not really a chev engine but a corporate engine. As for the V6 saab actually sources their engines from Holden, not the other way around.

Designing a whole new motor is actually more challenging than updating an existing motor (in most cases). Again theres nothing wrong with getting a whole new engine, especially with the introduction of the VE later this year. Its better to have a whole new vehicle than a half arsed car with old parts.
