I opened my emails tonight to find one from Paypal advising me that I had authorised a payment of $480 to someone in NSW. The email conveniently included a link to a site if the transaction was an error. Dumb me clicked the link and entered logon details and was halfway through filling in the personal details when the penny dropped. I closed the page and changed my password on paypal immediately.
The principle is simple, get someone fired up about a transaction they know nothing about and 'help' them by providing a link. I have been around long enough to know better, but it hooked me, hopefully not long enough to do any damage.

I hope for your sake it's all OK. I have been sent plenty of these, and the big thing is to NEVER open a link from within an email - logon the way you usually do and take action from there. This applies to ebay, paypal, banking etc. It sounds like you salvaged the account by changing the password, and hopefully the rest of the info never gets to them.
I have recently been sent scam emails and they look as if they come from ford forums. They include what looks like Fax details, but they are zip files, so I just delete them - max paranoia here!

Hi. Keep your eyes open for an email (might be in spam file where it belongs) about "notice to appear in court", with details in a zipped file. The zipped file contains a virus. No court in Austraila would send a summons to appear in court by email. Cheers MD

Yep the other week I had a similar paypal one with a link provided, telling me there was a problem with the 'Big W photos online' transaction of $56 I had made. Except I don't use that service.
What intrigued me was the small amount, so I went checking and yeah the proper paypal site had no reference to this whatsoever. |

They had a hot date with the trash can. Sent from Fort Laurnadale Attorneys or something like that. The domain it came from actually is real and linked to a real law firm (it seems??).

I received two of those notices to appear in court one in Bendigo and one in Geelong. Stated i had to bring witnesses with me and several other stupid comments. Of course deleted straight away. Get a good laugh out of them though.

There's a link on the actual Paypal site where you can report such spam and forward it to them. |

It looks like I closed everything down before any damage could be done. I also cancelled my card the same night, just in case. Looks like I dodged a bullet there.

On the side of caution, I have picked up a Visa Debit Card from my bank. If I am buying something online that accepts paypal, I will do a transfer for the money need from my account to the visa debit and then make the purchase. The same for itunes, Google Play Store, Samsung Wallet and anything else I need to input credit card details on the internet.

Fees? I never sell anything, so there are no fees on buying.

Heard eBay got hacked yesterday and was advised to change the password.
EBay owns PayPal so might be advisable to change PayPal password as well

this is why i always go to a services website myself and login. If there is any real problem you'll see it as soon as you login in most cases
Like in this instance, i would have go to the proper paypal website, logged in and clicked transaction history, if there was no $480 transaction, then no problem, if there was then i contact support via their website. Same thing with Ebay, Banks, Phones, Internet, etc Just makes you that bit safer when checking into things like this, only thing to make you angry after that is the fact that you've wasted time :(

The issue with the Ebay hacking is that it happened several weeks before they let the public know.
