http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/new...=1420356266147

Is it fair to say that anyone who gets snapped by a van or ute signwritten with Mobile Speed Camera probably deserves it?
Now if this were to occur in Victoria where the camera cars are unmarked I wouldn't have a problem with it.....

If Duncan Gay answers this single question then I can potentially digress...

To defeat the arguement of revenue raising, what about doubling the demerit points and removing the monetary penalty?

...........

Hang on, it's contracted out with the contractor getting a slice of the ticket as a cut.

Until it's proven ithere's no revenue raising (answer my question truthfully sir Dunksalot), anything "the man" does to stick it to this totalitarian socialist engineering scum is simply put, a good call.

Carl Scully suggested this very idea and no one wanted to take it up. Since then the scheme has indeed been contracted out so its a non goer.

On a different note its pleasing that the NSW road toll is dropping dramatically. Anyone of us could be around today only because of whatever safety measures are preventing deaths on the roads. Of course 309 people dying is still too many.

I don't have a problem with the NSW camera cars per se as the old adage don't speed and you won't get caught but on the news it is reported these vehicles are for black spots. I see one of these cars fairly regularly on Old Windsor Rd south bound between Gibbon Rd and Caroline Chisolm Dr Seven Hills/Winston Hills in peak hour. Also I have been driving this bit of road every weekday twice a day for 14 years and have never seen a major accident little known a minor one. Blackspot my ****..

Average joes definition of a 'black spot' - dangerous road, lots of accidents

Govt's definition of a 'black spot' - nice straight road, little traffic holdups, high average speed....

People drive without a licence so doubling points seems *ahem* pointless. All you need to do is watch any of the police shows on tv to see that. But, people pay fines and that ticks people off, that's a bigger deterrent than points that people dont 'instantly' recognise.

Screw with peoples time and money. People hate that.

I was thinking about this yesterday after driving past one well below the limit.

What rules / regulations / standards do these mobile camera vehicles need to abide by?

I'm sure it's no mistake that certain road signs are X cm above the ground and measure YxZcm.

How is it fair that the pre-warning signs can sit on the ground, on the side of a 3 lane road? This, surly can't be to standard?

What lanes do these cameras scan? Only the immediate lane next to the parked vehicle or all 3 lanes?

How can it be argued as fair that a sign on ground level is adequate to warn of a camera, a person in the 3rd lane would have no chance of seeing that sign across 2 other lanes and through traffic?

The sign I saw was leaning on a speed limit pole. That pole and sign must aide by certain standards in terms of size / location / height / even the colours and use of reflective materials.

Why are these mobile camera signs not placed high up on a tripod, so that they are in the line of sight of drivers?

Who is to say how far / close these warning signs are to the actual camera vehicle?

Why are they not placed on BOTH sides of a 3 lane road - assuming that the camera can scan across all 3 lanes?

Why are they so small when a much larger sign can easily be used?

I haven't been done by one yet - but it has been more to luck than following the rules.

Are the camera cars allowed to park in places that I would not be allowed to leave my own car for several hours???

I would really like to know the answer - especially, if the size and positioning of warning signs conform to any standards?

Cheers,

Jason

so they say its unsafe for a car to break down and wait for a tow in that spot (wink!! wink!!) but its perfectly safe for a camera car to park there?
if it was the police conducting this fair enough i have respect for them but its a private company who are ripping off the government doing this...i'd love to know how much the government makes off the speeding fines?

In the interests of "contract" confidentiality we will never know. Even with a gipa request they will never own up to the real deal with said private company.

Suffice to say would like to see the emails flying around from the private contractor complaining about loss of safety "cough" revenue ....

A reminder to them the election in nsw is March 2015...

Or they are parked with only the left indicator on making it appear they have pulled over for a phone call like any other motorist, I have seen this a few times.

Agreed about the Vic bit but still, I love a good bit of civil disobedience. You know, sticking it to the man.

If that happened in Vic you can be sure the response from VicPol will be extreme. The revenue must be protected.

There's Speeding and there's speeding.

10-20kms over, on a straight, clear road is driving to the conditions, ripping through a shopping area, or past families with toddlers is criminal.
This is what offends - the bulls#it slogan in NSW 'there's no such thing as safe speeding' pigs ar$e, it's called judgement and risk management.
It also depends on your car :-)

Perhaps if they didn't outright lie to us that speed cameras and radar and laser guns were the ONLY measuring device of any sort on the planet which doesn't ever, ever make a mistake and is always 100% accurate in all circumstances, with all operators, in all weather conditions, at all times of the day or night.

No scientist will ever say "This is exactly the measurement". They will say "This is the measurement...[i]plus or minus[i] this (clearly stated and noted) amount of variance".

The reason police never reveal the variance they allow is quite simple. The variance is either way from the measured speed. The speed gun has, suppose, a 10kph error factor. If you are measured at 72kph, that doesn't necessarily mean you were doing 72...with the 10kph error you could have been doing 62kph. However you could just as easily have been doing 80kph and got away with a lower reading. A 10% error figure isn't 5% either way. It's a possible variance from the measured amount either way by the whole 10%. That doesn't mean it's "20%"...it means the figure could be exactly right, or it could be up to 10% either way.

We used to use highly accurate digital thermometers in my last job, which had a variance of 0.2 degrees C either way. Therefore when we measured a temperature, say 10 degrees C, it could be exactly right, but it could be anything from 9.8 to 10.2, and we had to allow for this.

Melbourne Booze Bus and Speed Camera Locations on Facebook, check it out.

They aren't signed up or anything but they're obvious, its always a new shiny SUV parked on the side of the road, and if you see it from the front its got a bar with one spotlight mounted wide out to the side, and another black square box.

Found out yesterday these people get paid 65K a year to sit in a car doing nothing. Not a bad gig, if you don't care what people think of you. Friend of a friend applied for the job not knowing exactly what it was. When he found out what it was at the interview he decided to no longer go ahead with it.

What gets me the most about them is they operators themselves don't care about the rules they are enforcing.
Saw one packing up one day, minutes later my speedo is showing about 2-3kmh over the limit and here goes this camera car flying past me. Must of been running late to setup at the next location. The quicker he gets there, the quicker he starts making the roads safer.

Quoted for truth...

There is a nice but of road near my joint, two lanes each way separated by a grass strip, no traffic lights, goes from 90 to 70 and 200m up the road mobile speed camera every few days.

Black spot for sure....NOT

And the other place is Showground Rd, North bound between Pennant St and Britannia Rd. This is a 60kmph 2 lane rd. All I've seen happen on this rd is rear enders. One was, coincidentally related to the camera van. The first car saw the signs and slowed down to about 45kmph. Car behind it wasn't paying attention, rear ended the first one. The car behind also rear ended the 2nd car.

Ended up being a 4 car pile up.

Whenever the news or traffic report mentions an accident involving a car and a bike, i'll always imagine a moron in a car caused it, which would be correct in 99.something % of the time....sad fact of life.

I don't think we should rage at the operators, they're just doing the govco's bidding to look after their families. It always bothers me when some idiot gets out of the car and starts beating up on the poor sod just doing his job. Protest against the government if you're that passionate.

Its like the amount of people playing chicken with a truck or turning in front of one and not getting up to the speed limit....There is how many tonnes of metal coming down on you in a 100 zone and you in your little prius can't speed up quick enough? Well say bye bye to said prius!

Funniest one I saw was some idiot cut off a truck coming onto a freeway, somehow thought it was the trucks fault then sped up in front of it and tried the ol 'brake check'....Suffice to say the rear of that sedan was a third of the size by the time the truck stopped
