Default Oversize

Just before Christmas I was pulled over and fined for not complying to regulations for an oversize Load. $295

The cop was listing a few minor things but the main one was having a OVERSIZE sign front an rear

Now I'm happy to comply with regulations, but I think its handy if I'm able to find what they are in advance.
I have a Boat sitting on a 2.49M trailer but the Boats 2.59M at its widest point.
Its pretty easy to find the trailer is compliant but not a lot about oversize and what to do about it.
anyway I'm writing a letter and pretty hopeful of getting off.

I'm not sure that not knowing the rules is a valid excuse.

Costs nothing to try though

I don't like your chances of getting off, police have been having a bit of a blitz on oversize boats from all reports http://www.wake.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=37166

Boat imported from USA or brought here?

Begins here on vicroads:
https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/busi...light-vehicles

Road Safety (Vehicles) Regulations 2009 does list the limits but as far as I could see on a quick read, not what to do if you are over.

Perhaps follow the Yachting links on vicroads.

Yes the Cop told me I was un lucky because they were having a Blitz.
I found that link too Superoo, and I visited Vic Roads today where they had no more information, so told me to call and ask for Mass and Dimensions.
after an hour of on/off hold on the phone I was speaking to a very experienced and frustrated Girl as she knew the regulations, but they have been removed from the website.
The regulations changed in Feb last year, I can see I'm a Class O vehicle but there used to be a Bulletin telling how to comply.

You are oversize once you go over 2.5m which your boat is.

Pay the fine then get an oversize permit anytime you move your boat.

Read the link that Superroo posted. It tells you in that. Or call Vic Roads again if still unsure.

In NSW for Oversize agricultural vehicles the main things you would need are oversize signs front and back, side flags and a rotating beacon. I can't see why an oversize boat would be any different to any other oversize load.

Naddis I think you need to re read my posts. I have done this prior to posting..
I'm looking for the documentation that tells what to do when you have an oversized load, and there is none.. I don't need to call Vic Roads again and I'm not unsure.

Your example of an oversize Agricultural vehicle is different. Because it is normally carried but a heavy vehicle, ie where a Truck licence is required part of a truck licence training is how to handle an oversize load.

Reread Superroo's link. The last link in it. There is a form for light vehicle oversize permits. Otherwise ring Vic Roads again and ask exactly what you need to do to comply. Hopefully this time you get someone that can answer exactly what is needed.

By the way Agricultural vehicles can be anything from trailers through to large headers etc. A comb trailer or auger for example can be oversize yet be towed with a ute. A tractor can be driven on a car licence. So no an oversize load is an oversize load. But I was just giving an example of what we have to do. Not necessarily saying it is what you have to do.

Keep in mind if you dont have a permit and the applicable signs when travelling you may as well cancel your insurance because it wont be valid anyway.

Incorrect.
The 150mm applies if its less than 2.5m total width.

You can have a 2m trailer and 2.3m load
But you cant have a 2.4m trailer and 2.7m load.

You cannot exceed 2.5m at all unless you have a permit.

What someone tells you on the phone wont mean anything when you are pulled up by Vicroads or the Police telling you are oversize.

To quote VicRoads

"A load may project 150mm from the outermost part of the vehicle. However the maximum overall width of any vehicle or load must not exceed 2.5m"

This is what we joked about at VIC Roads, they were even registering a boat at the time I was there which had an overhang.
they are no concerned over such small overhangs

The link Naddis has just kindly posted does not say that.
The multiple people at vic roads did not tell me that.
Finally The Cop that fined me did not tell me that.

That make no sense does it.

According to you, if your trailer is 3m wide you don't need a permit because your boat does not overhang 150mm.

no I Meant 150mm to the total width so 75mm overhang ie 2650 width on the load.

Its pretty Clear that the maximum permissible trailer width is 2500 my boat overhangs 45mm each side (less than most peoples little finger)

It states down the bottom of this document your allowable width overhangs. Project no more than 150mm each side, as long as it does not exceed 2.5m

https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/~/me...ria.ashx?la=en

Just because some says something, doesnt not over rule what is actually written down as regulations. Unless youve got their name and have recorded the conversation it will mean nothing the next time a VicRoads officer pulls you over, and if he's having a bad day he can force you to not to go any further till you get the applicable permits.

Also as I said before it can result in your insurance being void if there is an accident.

I know of a truck driver who had it happen to them because the truck was 30cm too long (due to a bull bar)
