So I've bought an AU ute, Compliance plate says December 2001 - AUII.
The guy I'm buying it off refers to it as an 2002 model, as it is a December build / model. I think it is a 2001, as that was the year it was built. Period. Am I right in assuming so? |

I think the other guy is right but I also never use model years as I think they're deceiving. I always refer to build dates

Build date says 2001 therefore it is a 2001 model. Thats how I see it...I always go by the build date.

If its a December 2001 build, it should be a AU III.

AU III started some time late November or early December 2001. I had an AU III Fairmont with a build date of 11/12/2001.

I'd agree with that. It's obviously one of the last AU2's to leave the factory.
Au's were built for 4 years, 1998 - 2002 My AU2 was built 4/2000, the first month of the AU2 model. Therefore the last AU2's would likely have left the factory by December 2001, & probably sold off by dealers by Dec' 01, & January/February 2002 as a run out model. Fyi, I'm guessing. |

In car history utes are often a little behind the sedans in getting updated - maybe the AU11 utes went a little longer

I also recall that Ford had an issue with official labelling in 2002 with a number of series III models being incorrectly listed on documentation as a series II. This wasn't rectified until late 2002.
I know my T Series was registered as a series II model for months even though the data plate stated series III.
