My fairmont seems to have a mind of its own on auto, it will blow cold air for a while then randomly start blowing really hot air to the point where its cooler outside then when its idling it will start blowing cold air again.
what could be the cause of this? i thought that it might need topping up but wouldn't it blow any cold air at all if that was the case? edit: crap sorry i posted it in the wrong section, could someone please move it? Last edited by GS608; 23-12-2008 at 02:00 PM. |

Sounds like it might be low on gas, get it checked and go from there, mine did this at one stage and that's all it was.

Strange question but does it only blow hot air on heavy load/throttle ?
It is prob. the inlet manifold gasket leaking if so, mine did some really strange things due to lack of vacuum when the gasket was leaking hey presto all fixed after replaced the gasket. |

Try putting the climate control into diagnostic mode and see what error code it spits out, I had a similar problem a few years ago turned out to be the motor that drove the mixer door that blended the hot and cold air was shot and kept sticking, one minute you'd get cold air next you'd get hot. Also try cleaning out the internal temp sensor in the side of the climate control module (pipe adjacent to the clock) sometimes this gets a build up of dust and crap which causes false readings

i know if i have the heater on in mine it blows cold out top and hot out the bottom.. might be same problem just yet to get it checked

Had an issue with mine where it would be either full on hot or full on cold. Did the reset on it, all good now.

probablly a faulty orifice tube they fill up with crap

Degassed system, had correct gas amount.Removed the accumulator and measured oil amount. Remove and inspected orifice tube. Orifice tube 50% blocked with debris. Fault Description As vehicles are getting older, faults highlighted through fault codes can often be the end result of underlying problems. In this case a block orifice tube and slightly contaminated system shut the system down. Fault Solution Replacement of A/C Orifice tube, TX2621 (orange), Accumulator RD2809 and the Ford transducer switch PS4652, added oil and system serviced. Performance tested OK. Tip When a fault code is logged in a system, always think of possible problems or causes that might affect an electronic components operation. if this is the case you will by law need it repaired by an approved aircon workshop as its now illegal to do just regas the system without fixing the fault

Apologies for bring up an old thread but does the engine temperature have anything to do with the AC operation. Reason I ask is because when I'm on the freeway with my AU2 the AC works well. As soon as I head up a bit of a hill whilst still maintain the same speed whilst not kicking down a gear it cuts out and it wont come back on for a few mins. Its not just its normal cycling either as the cabin temp heats up pretty quickly.
It will also play up when doing stop start driving in traffic. Was thinking of changing the thermostat to a cooler one. Currently theres a 92 degree one in it.

My understanding/memory, on low series no.
On high it's only the heater that uses eng temp to delay turning on. Even then the switch on point is really low, so I doubt it could get cold enough to turn off. Your problem sounds more like A/C gas being low
