Angry Dumping Physical Memory

*note: if this is in the wrong section, can the mod's move it? (:*

Hello, this has been happening a while now but lately my computer when i right click on the dialup icon and press disconnect (or when im doing anything) the blue screen pops up and says "dumping physical memory", "physical memory dumping complete". How would I fix that? A friend of mine said it had something to do with the RAM and how it's only on 1 slot and that I should get a new one on another slot. Would this work? That and lately, when im online, I cant visit any websites but im still able to chat on msn. =/

Could it be a virus? ergh I'm thinking about reformatting the computer tomorrow but I have soo much stuff on the harddrive that I want to keep =/ Computer problems are horrible!!

Can anyone help me?

*btw if its any help, my computers a p4 3.0ghz, 80gb hdd, 480mb ram, running xp with service pack 1*

I think SP1 is the main problem ... hee hee.
Might be a virus though causing havoc too.

Your friend has some.. interesting ideas but it is highly unlikely to solve your problem. Try installing avast (www.avast.com) and gettign it to run a boot time scan as well as grabbing some tools from www.grisoft.com that you can run off a boot disc without going into windows that will clean out a lot of viruses. You'll also want to check for spyware, there are many of these but don't just d/l anything that says it removes spyware. Start with spybot 1.4.

Also get another hard drive, they aren't expensive and save you a lot of hassel when reinstalling your OS. Or if you do reinstall set-up a 5-10GB partition on your hdd so you have 2 drives one for data and one for the OS Always try and keep your data drive as clean as possible you don't want to reinstall only to be infected again from your own PC.

We get that blue screen sometimes. My brother usually tells me to just hit the restart button, but I think that's because it disconnects the internet, and he can't shoot people in the head anymore, on his stupid online game. We only usually get it once every few months, and as far as I know we don't have any virus or spyware on here, but what would I know, i'm blonde and just lucky i know how to turn the computer on.

You're just afraid of the headshot! : once every few months is a little odd, could just be a small fault in the RAM depending on how often the PC gets used.

I tell ya, i'm so sick of sitting in another room and hearing him yell GO GO GO GO GO, and abusing all these "noobs" playing, drives me insane. These days he doesn't play CS as much, he plays some other lame game called RuneScope or something, not to mention the fact that he thinks i'm totally interested in what he has to say about said games. As far as the RAM goes I think my mum stole some and stuck it in her bf's computers so now we got less, but it was doing it before it got stolen, I just know it was something that made the pc go fast.

Oh yeah I guess I should mention that the pc is on pretty much all the time, except overnight on weekdays.

My FPS of choice is F.E.A.R atm I love the multiplayer but I got NFS MW Black Edition couple of days ago so been playing that. I really only buy games for the MP as I have yet t play a SP game that isn't frustratingly predictable and or easy. It's more fun against other people sometimes they can actually give you a challenge.

Ahem anyway. If that PC is on all the time and it is BSOD only rarely you'd need to look more closely at what is happening each time it does it to solve the problem.

What kind of internet connection do you have? Is it powered by the computer via USB? I'm thinking it could be a PSU problem whereby when you disconnect the modem (assuming its a USB modem) draws some power from the computer and the PSU voltage lines fluctuate.

Alot of blue screens are caused by dodgy PSUs.

If that was the case connecting another USB device would kill it. I doubt right clicking on the connection and disconnecting a USB modem's WAN connection would cause it to use more power let alone spike it enough to BSOD a system.

What modem is it and have you got the latest drivers? Strange things can happen with USB.

I dunno man... I've seen some cheap mobos and PSUs (assuming its a cheap mobo) fall over just by looking at it. But yes, check your drivers.

Click? you might want to check where the click is coming from, could be a Hard drive or power supply that's dying.

If you are re-using the PSU, are you sure the wattage is enough for the new equipment? That could be why. Also remember that just because the PSU says 500W doesnt mean it can actually handle 500W. Some of the manufacturers count heat dissipation as part of the 500W.
