Is it just me or is everyone else noticing that the Mk II RS2000 Escorts are commanding higher than ever asking prices these days?
My mate in Melbourne is interested in buying a white RS2000 coupe as a project but they are creeping well beyond his price range.

The four doors are still reasonably priced and the price of the two door is still cheaper here than in the uk. At least we dont have the huge rust problem here. Price depends very much on condition.

My brothers first car (in 2003) was a 4dr MkII RS2000. The owner moved to the UK and told his parents to get rid of it.
He paid $2500 for it with 6mths reg and spent $500 on the RWC. Zero rust and completely original in very good condition. About 12mths after getting it he had an engine fire whilst driving down the highway. Completely destroyed the car. God damnit.

Like most classic prices vary hugely..to the point of it being silly.
You need to set a budget and work to that. Buy a cheapy and you might spend more on body/panel..but then again you will know it was done right. There is usually a happy medium, id say anywhere from $4000-8000 for a decent 2 door would be a starting point. I too was keen on an escort project but went with the Alfa instead, working out great so far.

I bought my 4 door MK2 RS last year. Paid $7000 for it. Its an absolute mess. All complete but literally everything needs to be replaced ie seats, carpet, hoodlining, all bushes, shocks, brakes, weather seals, engine seals, and thats not including the body which has rust everywhere. But the car has sentimental value ( I owned it before years ago ) so for me its worth it and couldnt really bargain too hard with the seller but if it wasnt this exact car I wouldnt have paid $2000 for it. Theres quite a few on ebay at the moment but they are like inbetween cars ie. too good to be $3000 or less but not good enough to be good

I thing the key point was was 'asking' price. Wouldn't be the first time someone has put it up for sale either looking for a woodduck to buy it, or they have too much sentimental value about what its worth.
We are all aware of people putting cars up for sale to keep the 'other half' happy - what better way to appear to be doing something about it by advertising it - its not your fault no one is interested in buying it I know of 2 RS's (4 doors) that have sold recently for $4500 and $2000 - conditioned varied but that was fair money for the condition. No Rego but the dearer one should have passed a RWC. 2 Doors do get better prices (like XA-XC Hardtops vs 4 doors) - but start looking at the prices being asked/sold for standard escorts and how he RS compares. |

What's everyone's thoughts of the RS2000 current prices now, my brother is looking at a unfinished project he found, it's been stripped but apparently all there, slight rust but nothing that can't be fixed the owner wants 8k for it... It is a 2 door, my brother asked my opinion and I'd say it's a good restoration, I've always been into XR-XC so I havent really followed the prices of them and to me 8k seems over the top but they seem quite rare, I went and looked at a real rusty one with him a few weeks ago, it had no motor no box, rusty floors etc and it apparently sold for 8.5k...
Thoughts?

The last one I sold was a RUSTY two door, ten years back, for 5k so 8k seems about right nowadays, depending on condition that is...
Getting hard to find a complete GL or Ghia for under 5k. Alot of them were shipped back to the UK for club rallying, our dry climate shells were worth 500 bucks here and up to 5000 euros over there. On the up side though theres lots of repo parts and panels being made for them.

Having a bit more of a think, if its in pieces the things that need to be there are:
The scheel seats in good condition, original beta cloth alone, ex UK, could be up to $1500, seat rails can be rusty but are the same as Ghia Dash with oil pressure gauge/ fittings, gear knob and heater surround. Nose cone and fittings, preferably with no rips or tears and without drill holes in the grill, a perceived fix for over heating. Bonnet, can be hard to get. Rear bumper and end caps. Original Volante wheels, if you're going that way, wheels come up often, make sure they're Escort not Cortina and have centre caps, they're getting hard to find. Otherwise everything else is just GL spec stuff, hope that helps...

if it is a genuine 2 door RS2000 and has the important bits that Rallye Sport listed, then I would go for it. That is a good price these days.

One question, and I feel I should know this... but what is the difference between Cortina and Escort Volante wheels?
