Hi there,
in the past week or so my Mondeo 's park & rear light has been staying on after I have locked the car. Sometimes it comes on about 20 mins after the car has been locked and neighbors have come around to tell me they think I have left my lights on! I understand that the Mondeo has a feature where if you put the indicator on once the engine is off and key is out of ignition, then this will activate these lights down the side of the car corresponding to the indicator. However, this is happening to me even without me putting the indicator on. I have also noticed that when I come back to the car and put my key in the ignition, the LEFT indicator is ON - despite me ensuring the indicator is not in the left position when exiting the vehicle. This happens regardless of whether the headlights are on AUTO on/off, or not. Has anyone had this problem before? - I have googled it, but there is nothing out there - could it be a relay switch failing? If so - which one? Anything else anyone can suggest, save taking it to an auto electrician? Thank in advance! |

You need to clean your indicator module.
I had a similar problem. I took some pics, and was going to do a write up, but..... A simple job, split the steering column, remove the module, clean the contacts and re-lube then reinstall. Problem solved.

I think you're probably spot on - I had a fiddle with the indicator arm and problem stopped for a day.
I will take a proper look this weekend and do as you suggest! |

I'll dig out the pics on the weekend.
A few torx screws to split the column and remove the module. I used an aerosol contact cleaner and cotton bud.

After you've cleaned it, apply some Deoxit to the contacts - not too much just a thin film. Jaycar sell it.

I FIXED IT!
Thanks for your help everyone I took pics - for the 'future person with same problem' and will post soon. If this is YOU, read on: - It was really EASY! I just used a metric socket and undid the main bolt holding the bottom panel on. There was no need to undo the torx screw (just as well, because it requires a long tool which I didn't have). From there, the top panel slides towards the settering wheel and pops open, revealing just enough of the bottom screw on the indicator arm (there are just two phillips head screws). You then pull out the indicator. Then you need to undo the two screws holding the circuit board in, and undo the electric cable on it, and pop out the circuit board. From there, you can wipe the black sludge (teeny pieces of metal) off it where the three contacts are made. I also bent up the three contact bits of metal to ensure they are a snug fit (see pics). I did the same for the high beam. Put it all back together in reverse order and bob's your uncle! Such an easy fix - and if you're still having problems, just buy one off ebay and fit it yourself. Super easy. Auto electrician said he would need the car for a day to diagnose and then a day or more to get the part - this took me under 20 mins, while I had a conversation with two other people. If only the transmission were as easy fix as this! (damn that slipping/shuddering in 1st gear....) |
