Default Au ford sohc 4.0 utility timing chain rattle and tensioner oil leak

Hello

I have an oil leak from my timing chain tensioner and am thinking of replacing the tensioner as I have an occasional timing chain rattle. The motor has done about 220 000 kilometers and was wondering if replacing just the tensioner will fix the rattle or should I replace the guides as well. Is it worth replacing the timing chain as well? I have read the chains are supposed to be good for 400 000+ kilometers?

Thanks!

If you're going to the trouble of doing the tensioner you may as well do the chain and guides while you are at it.

The oil leak can probably be rectified quite easily by replacing the O-Ring.
This would of course require removal of the tensioner.
As part of the reinstallation process, you should be able to retension the timing chain.

Thanks Blue Dog

It turns out I had a leak from a bolt just below the tensioner that seems to have oil pressure feeding into it. While testing the leak I had the power steering pump bracket off and found out out one of the bolts has oil pressure fed into it and made quite a mess. But with thread sealant the tesioner and leaking bolt now seem good.

I did not take a pic when it was leaking and apart unfortunately.
Mine is not VCT which is a shame.
It might be worth checking the timing chain tensioner behind the steering pump bracket.I have had two motors and the tensioners seems to leak over time.
I will probably replace the tensioner and chain soon and will send photos then.
I now have a problem with the speedo sometimes registering 30-30 kph at traffic lights and I replaced the speedo transducer a year ago!
Cheers
