Default Vehicle Jobs You Dislike

Not model-specific, eg alternator on a V6 Alfa. Just stuff you really don’t enjoy doing anytime on any vehicle.

For me the #1 “Avoid/Procrastinate” is cleaning extruded weatherseals off the car. So many grooves, so much filth, so hard to get nicely clean and then hours or days to dry! Runner-up job is cleaning properly inside back windows.

Wiper blades.
I can rebuild a motor, paint and panel no issues. Electrical, no dramas. 5 full restos so far on basket case cars.
But when it comes to wiper blades, I concede defeat to the kid at autobarn.

And also having to use the hand pumper for diff and tranny oil.
That thing is a god damn joke, but I'm usually too tight to buy the squeeze packs so spend the next hour swearing at myself.

Starter motor on a bf falcon. If you can get to the top bolt without creating new swear words, you either have really small hands or have a lot of patience.

The job I used to dislike was exhausts. No matter how well you got the pipework to fit,you knew that in 3-4 years it had to be done again, whereas electrical etc, done once ,done properly, never to be seen again

I have a few Smart Fortwo's, a 03, a 05, and a 09, I would have to say starter motor change is 1 and radiator fan a close second at being a pain in the ***, set aside a day for each.
Engine drop for the starter, and full front off for the Fan.

Wheel bearings. Damn things never want to seat properly.

Exhausts - Old ones never want to come apart.

Anything where you need to have tentacles instead of arms, eg coil packs on the EF.

I enjoy all the chores on working on cars.

Except for opening up seized aluminum fuel and brake lines with flare nut spanners. That I don't like.

Same as my Focus and our Fiesta's.

As much as I hate VAG cars Skoda has this good design where you just lift out a plastic locking tab and the whole assembly just pulls out of the car - it's great.

SZ Territory and FG MKII Falcon are pains in the asses to change, very limited access behind.

Worst for me was when I owned a TL Magna VR:

- Changing the back 3 spark plugs, freaking nightmare. Front 3 where eay but the way the intake manifold is designed on the V6 makes access to the back 3 almost impossible unless you take the manifold off...
- Changing the Headlight Bulb- had to take the front wheel off, then the inner guard and go in that way...

I bought my TL as demo and was told at a service (before I started doing it myself) that from the factory they have better (iridiums) in the back bank and normals in the front so they can change the rear ones less frequently than the front 3 (this was Mitsubishi dealer services protocol apparently) and was one of the reasons I began servicing myself as I wanted all 6 plugs changed at the same time, even though I hated doing it...

Changed my rears at about 170k and still running well at 350+k when it got traded. And the thing didn’t run any better or worse with the new ones, probably would have got the whole 350k out of the originals
