Push button start cars - car won't start

Mum's Kia Sorrento uses a push button start, however its doing something odd today and won't start. When you step on the brake and push the start button, you can hear a series of very rapid clicks coming from the engine bay, presumably the start motor?, but the car won't start.

For those with push button start vehicles, any ideas what could be the issue?

Starter motor failure?

Didn't think it was battery as the starter was still being triggered. Mum did leave one of the doors opened a few weeks ago, which ran the battery completely flat. I recharged it but looks like it might be drained again.

Get the battery charged on a charger, then load tested. It’s the only way to have certainty.

It will be the battery, 100%..My wives MY21 Sorento did that exact thing a few months ago and it was just the battery. Kia even replaced it under warranty for us at our house...

That's your personally delivered entry pass to the 'is it the alternator? Is it a parasitic load? Is it the starter motor? Or is the battery just halal?' game.

Once you hear click click click click its usually the battery is halal, sometimes you might be lucky enough to get the very slow half a turn over of the motor, then the clicking.

As per the others - charge up battery on the battery charger, then load test with a carbon pile load tester - your local auto electrician will have one of those and usually battery tests are free

While they're there they'll usually do an alternator test, multimeter set to 20V, all your lights and electrical accessories on + fan up high and AC then check the voltage across the battery terminals at idle 13.4V-14.8V - A-OK.

Then do it at 2000 RPM as well.

Then make sure you buy one from them if its just the battery thats halal, rather than the flogs at Burson/Repco/Autobarn/SCA - they'll likely be more competitive on price.

If the battery is on the old side usually the draining it dead flat trick is the death blow to them.

Battery hasn't been changed since new, so 8 years now. Its done well. Having it drained when mum left the door open killed it.

Definitely the battery then. Had the same thing when the Jag's battery was dying, similar age as well. Push the button, click click click click.............

If possible, a quick battery check, simply turn on the head lights go for high beam . Lights are dim then likely a flat battery.
