Default au v8 or tickford 6?

gday guys my mate is looking at getting a au fairmont ghia either a tickford one with the tickford 6 or a v8 one. how much quicker/powerful is the 8 over the 6
is the 8 in the fiarmonts a 185kw or 200kw?

how much power did the ticky au 6 have?

not sure if the v8 is quicker then the tickford 6 down the 1/4 it be rather close about mid 15 sec passes
however i know that the v8 has approx 187kw & the tickford 6 has approx 165kw.
Id personally be after a tickford 6 with the petrol prices & insurance these days.

from memory the V8 puts out 175kW in non-XR forM. VCT was around 164kW i think?

Spot on. The LTD got the 185kw engine, but fairmonts "only" got 175. That 175kw comes with 395Nm torque though compare to 360nm for the 6. So it's more than power, the torque is what gets the V8 moving quicker than the six.

The thing about this sort of question is, if you have to ask the question, then you really should only get the 6. Only those who know not to ask deserve and get the 8.

on a serious note though, dont rule out a V8 on insurance. Im 20 yrs old and hold full comp insurance for a fairly worked S3 XR8 Ute, so it can be had. You just have to know the right people!

Most AU Ghia will be VCT sixes the V8's willbe harder to find. The VCY has 168Kw the V8 175kw. Not much in it really the V8 much torquire the VCT much revier.

The V8 will be easier to get to go real fast with serious money spent.

With exh intake mods only the six would be faster though. Stock the V8 will be faster on the street on the qtr the VCT reels it in down the back end though.

Its a tough call. If you like V8's get one really it would be the more collectable Ghia

Pretty sure that the 6's have always been quicker down the 1/4 over the 8's. They just have more torque and get up to speed quicker.

Yes pretty well right. I have a mate with an AUI Fairmont v8 wagon and it feels great 0-60k and from 2000-3500rpm is super sweet but 4500rpm on its very disapointing. My wagon kills it in second gear as he runs out of puff around 100k and I storm past to 125k. Up till then its close though.

Show us your proof. That is the biggest crock of *****3. It used to be the case up to about EF, but from there, when the 8 got the ability to breathe a bit better, the 8 is quicker - In stock form! Here are Jonbays' times from various magazine test etc:

looked up my AU test folder and I have found a test on a V8 Auto Fairmont Sedan 175kw not XR or LTD doing a 0-100 in 7.9 and qtr in 15.8. Seems about right.

Roughly the same as an XR6 VCT then. I would guess the fairmont ghia VCT would be in the 8s and low 16s. So really, there's not a lot in it anyway. Fuel efficiency about the same, weight about the same (the V8 would be more though), and times within 0.1 or 0.2. I'd go the 8.

mate the mags usually quote a two way average not a best one way time. Also they are on deadlines so they run it to do it and get it over and writen up not to get the best possible time you couild ever get.

I think Motor tested the AU Falcon wagon and got a 17.0 sec qtr out of it!

I could get 16.8 best out of mine trying hard when new.

gees, that means that my stock falcon would keep up with a VCT equiped Ghia? why are they so slow? i though VCT was supposed to be the better motor?

They are the better motor, but they all came optioned with an extra 70kg or so of IRS. So more power & more weight = same or slower times. The diff ratio is still better than a stock Forte, so they should still be quicker than yours.

The AU V8 is sooo simple (and cheap) to turn into a low 14 second beast.

If you are after good performance from the factory, cheap power upgrades, and almost limitless power potential then get the V8. You wont be sorry.

NOTE: I've been known to be a little one-eyed on this topic...but the AU Windsor really is an awesome little motor

If your looking for an AU Fairmont Ghia look for the best example at the best value you are going to be able to find more tickford I6s though.

oh, i knew it would be quicker as my car is still just a half decent looking taxi, i just thought it would be by more than that. but i did not take the extra weight of the IRS into acount, that explains it.
