I think there were Ford photos from the era with the spoilers fitted, it would have hidden the leaf spring mounts etc.

They did use Jeep transfer case, diff etc. The main reason they didn't continue with it from what I have read is that the leaf spring mounts fed loads into areas of the body shell that were not designed to take them, basically it was too expensive to design the body intended for coils to take leaf front suspension for the number of sales. Goldie is right too, they used the 6cyl tilted to make room for the front diff, together with the 3 speed manual.

i find everyone who doesnt own an AU doesnt like it, and they ALWAYS use the AUI as the example. sorry im not having a go its just...well more AU for me out:

Some interesting stuff never knew they sent the au to asia and el to South Africa i did know about the fairlane in England and i think they got a few fpv's there as well and they sent the gtho to south africa too.

Back to the XY 4x4 - If it used a Ford I6 tilted slightly on it's side:
- Did that mean that it used different engine mounts?
- Did it use a slightly different inlet manifold so that the carbs would sit "flat"?
- How much was the tilt (like a Chrysler Slant) and how did that affect oil flow?

All the engine bay pics I have seen show the engine laying over, will try and find some and scan them. Meanwhile, look here

From what I can see it appears that the engine is mounted further over to the left and tilted to the right. The scan is a bit hard to make out.
