Ok, I'll put one up. This should be fairly easy for you guys.
Hopefully someone hasn't done this one before. It's hard to tell as there are a LOT of pages in this thread |

OK; it's an engine not a car but it is extremely important in the context of Australian history. What is it and why is it so important?

Another hint is that there is also a connection with the 1920's Australian movie "The Term of His Natural Life".

Not sure what you want?
"Edlebrock Ford V860 and has motorcycle barrells and heads bolted on to it" "This is the engine that is reputed to have been in the car that Aussie Jim McMahon was driving when he lost his life."

Yes; it is the engine is that is reputed to have been in the car that Aussie Jim McMahon was driving when he lost his life so I will give it to you. But it is also claimed to be the first Australian made V8. See http://www.pitstop.net.au/view/gener...uery/plu/21221 and
http://www.vintagespeedway.com/BookReviewsP1.html Jim is also famous as one of Australia's early movies stars featuring (mostly in minor roles) in Australian and Hollywood movies so there is a lot of history around this engine; pity it's not in a museum here rather than in a private collection in the US.

It's a 1957 Edith made by Gray and Harper Ltd.
Made in Oz; oh the shame. Put it back on the verge for the next recycle day.

You'd think they spend the $50 in materials that it would take to restore it.

I wonder if the original Edith ever forgave her hubby for naming that "car" after her (I imagine it's named after one of the maker's partners - they couldn't do that toa daughter could they).
"The good news honey is I have named our new car after you; the bad news is it transparently cheap and nasty." Hmmm perhaps it replaced a horse or mule named "Edith".

Oh I had the Vigillante answer about an hour after you posted the clue but figured I'd let someone else have a go so it doesn't look like I'm being a car guessing hog
I just love this thread. It's fun. |
