I appreciate what your doing, and its a nice car; I just don't see why its so special..
I do like it, and would love to own/drive one alongside my current work horeses but where is the appeal? "The last Monaro" doesnt seem that special - should I go buy the last Fairlane made lol? I dunno, i rekon it will be worth a bit in 25 years ye, but proberly not quite what we're all thinking.. Good luck and stop looking under her dress. ;) |

Depends, theres no need to lie and talk thing up either. The simple fact is theres 2 brand new ones left in the country, and about 20 HSV versions, so i cant see how its worth 92 grand when you can buy a brand new one for 60.

If the ford forums are still around in the year 2032, make sure you post up some pictures of the beast then. Cheers _2:.

I think your dad has made a very smart investment for the future, and good on him!
no more are been produced, so keeping it low k is obviously a VERY high prioirty. as is keeping everything else in MINT condition. heres an idea, put the car in an air buble, and keep it at a constant tempreture (to prevent rust). just wondering if he is running the engine at all? (it's probably a good idea) also, when/if you register the car KEEP THE ORIGINAL PLATES. for some reason its worth more. (got me buggered but it's true) now bring on the new GT-HO!!!! |

very interesting, as above would be curious to see what its worth in a bunch of years.
what all you knockers need to realise, way back when the XY GT's were new, people would have been told they were crazy for storing them up, they would have copped the "they're meant to be driven" and the "it wont be worth doing" lines etc... good luck! |

good luck mate, wish i had enough cash to keep mine for even just a sunday cruiser.
..make sure he keeps it so you get her passed down to you. Even if it doesn't appreciate, you'll have a sweet car in 20yrs or so. I still drool over old school falcons and monaros/kingswoods, if there in top condition you've gotta admire them. |

Does anyone recall those 2 Brock Commodores that sold recently, both never registered and under 100k's on them?
Anyone remember what they sold for? If you have the cash to purchase a new car for no other reason than hanging onto it as an investment, then go for it!

its a gamble and it may just pay off. good luck! the only thing that would thwart your plans would be if holden started making them again. Nice ride

What ?....... Ohhh how soon we all forget ! The monaro won Bathurst ! The Bathurst 24hr race a few years back !Not only won, they slayed the oposition soundly and did it easily ! Not only did the monaro win bathurst , another came second and easily ! TOTAL dominance !!!!!!!!! This lowly aussie built and designed car beat all commers from the most prestigious sports car manufacturers all over the globe ! : Now the truth, while the monaro won and came second and by many laps they were basically 2 , $300 000 fully fledged V8 supercars , WITH BIGGER ENGINES , against all the other cars ( Porsch , Lamborghini, Ferrari, Bmw, Suburu, Mitsubishi, just to name a few. These cars were basically showroom versions with a rolcage, and limited modifications to suspensions , engines ,brakes and body ! I still have no idea how holden and garry rogers motorsport were allowed to run 2 fully fledged RACE cars with bigger engines than were ever offered to the public against road cars with very limited modification in the first place ????? Now the fact that all the other cars in the series had to run cars that were offered to the public from the showroom, with some modifications , the monaro was NEVER sold to the public with 7+ liters of motor !Just that fact is a blatant breach of the rules, yet they were allowed to run, and that is not even going into how they were built ! No I can see why your dads monaro is so special , it represents how low holden will stoop...... and CHEAT to win . And they were jumping up and down holding the trophies high above their heads and adertising left right and centre about their couragous win to the world . Id be embarresed to own something which is so blatently UNAUSTRALIAN ! holden make Chinese swimmers and weightlifters look like model sportsmen ! While I am a ford man thru and thru, I am not one eyed and some of my alltime favourite cars in different forms of motorsport and cars in general are holdens . if you winge about this post all I have to say is Im just stating what happened , but good luck with your dads venture . Its your money and you have the right to use it any way you please . While my first paragraph may have been a bit sarcastic , my wish of good luck is sincere !

Cant see it still sitting there in 25+ years time, in that tin garage where theres no insulation and only a thin cover over it. Needs to be tucked away peferably in a humidity controlled igloo where theres no chance anything will get dropped on it.
Also needs to be run every couple of months and brakes etc worked otherwise in 25 years time components will need to be dismantled and reconditioned before they'll work again. And no, I'm not jealous, I have a couple of toy cars myself that I take out at times to enjoy them. And I dont have covers over them so I can see and sit in them at any time. |

Wow, wish I had the money to do something like this. Good luck to your dad. It would be very interesting to see how much its worth later on. As someone else said, if the forums are still around when it comes out to play, post an update.

A mate of mine who lives in Perth bought the last 2 red ones in Australia, one is an Auto and the other a manual. The auto doesn't get driven much but the manual is his daily drive at the moment. He plans to put them both on blocks when they get 50,000 kms. Waste of money in my opinion....

Oh my god there are some haters on this forum! LOL!
It was never bought as a financial investment - it was bought to hand down. Monaros are VERY iconic whether you like it or not - whether in motorsport or on the road, they're great cars and theres no denying it. Whoever that bloke above was stating theres plenty of them left, my brother is also a stock manager at a Holden dealership (yes pretty much all my family is involved in the automotive business) and i can assure you there is no un-registered, un-driven, CV8Z Monaros left. Why else would someone make an offer like that? The car won't stay in the shed, it'll get taken to one of dad's garages and treated right. A few of you must not know that GTHOs aren't the only valuable cars out there, pretty much any Brock, Group A, Walkinshaw, etc kept in mint condition will fetch high dollars. As for the monaros smashing the porsches... uncles got a few of them too! |

Ok revelation time, I have always loved the Monaro when it came out. Infact if I didn't go with the XR8 a V2 CV8 would be in my garage.
Personally I would drive it but keep it very low millege and drive in weekend away from daily grind. A car not driven at all for years will be a waste as the engine will not be fit and seals, hoses will be prone to leak from perishing if not used.

I was thinking about doing the exact thing with the same car. I'll be kicking myself in 20 years when these sell for a packet.

In thirty years time I think you will see more than 1 zero mileage Monaro come out of the wood work. I think that they will stir the emotions of the 20 something's of now when they are 50+ and cashed up. Smart move. And for those who don't get it (the Monaro thing), at least Holden gave its faithful what they wanted. How many people sit here and pine for the next generation GTHO? I wonder how many people would sit here and criticise Ford if they re-released a limited edition 2 door Falcon? |

It was believed to be the fastest 4 door in the world at the time when fast cars were almost exclusively 2 door but is that better than the fastest rotary in the world, the RX7 and I wonder if the Focus XR5 is the fastest 5 cylinder or the Golf TDI the fastest 4 cylinder diesel? Someone will think that is important. Right now there are some people who like them and are prepeared to pay the same amount of money as small average yaght or stink boat (like one of the bazillion you see in Sydney Harbour) or a small light aircraft or a very ordinary painting or a rare bottle of wine just to own one. If that is what you like then go for it, the world is a diverse place and there is room for everyone regardless or how eccentric your personal pleasures are. Just to show the difference in investment, in 1971 the $5k you spent on a GTHO would have bought you 100 acres of beach front land here in QLD which is now worth hundreds of millions not $800k. It is not about the money, or of it is then the investor is not very good at it. My current house is worth almost $1M and I paid $225 for it 7 years ago and it is EASY to sell. Collecting is about emotion not reason or logic which is why the collectors and their bands of rabid hangers on get so all wound up about it. |

I Wonder what 60K invested in a decent super fund will be worth in 30 years... currently good funds are returning 25+% PA compounding....
New cars depreciate in value regardless of K's or condition and are meant to be driven. You'd only put one away as part of a hobbie or collection, not as an investment.

It's gotta be more exhilarating than buying Artwork...although I am not so sure about this particular model's place in Aussie / World motoring history.

I think alot of yuo are missing his point. It is being put in storage to be handed down, not as an investment. A damn good hand me down if you ask me.

That's mad MattyJ.. I'd do that in a quick flash if I had the cash.
It's obvious some special care needs to be taken to ensure it is running as good as it is now in 30 years, and those who have the cash to do something like this would most likely know who to liaise with to get the best advice so that everything is as A1 as it is now in 30 years. The haters blow dick. If you want to do what MattyJ's uncle or Dad or someone has done get off a forum and get a real job and work hard. Sundeep |

Look, who cares what it is... you put a Hyundai in storage its gunna be worth something to someone some day. This Monarao, I believe will not just be worth something it will be worth a packet. Just remember this is the LAST Monaro Model to be built. Im wondering however is this car being kept primaraly(sp) to make a buck or is it too because somebody needs to keep Australian Motoring alive. I honestly believe that neither Ford or Holden will still be here in another 30 years.
Good Luck mate... and remember if it Rusts it can be fixed dont worry what people say i think its worth it. Cheers Dan

A car with so many electroincs may or may not store to well.. I'd be worried about all the electronics, ECU etc after such a long sit.. A humidity controlled bubble would have to be a good investment.. Ever tried to boot up an Old 486 thats sitting in the cupboard.. stinky, stinky crash :(

Good luck mate. If i had the money i would try the same thing, i will be interested to see if it does increase in value or not. BTW, the people talking about the HSV coupe, its not a monaro, it is a HSV Coupe GTO,GTS, Coupe4. The true monaro are the ones Holden produced, which is the CV8 and CV8Z like the one being stored. If any of them are going to hold price, i would say its the CV8Z, but time will tell. Good luck again.
