Sorry if my post was off topic George, but i just feel bad when people put aside their own safety for the sake of a few bucks.
You do make a very good point though, there really is no need to go overboard with tyres if you dont use them. I think i buy expensive tyres for piece of mind as you mentioned, but then i am a bit of a hoon sometimes! :(

No offence taken Evan, and your comments were fair enough. We were talking about how good tyres were etc.

I haven't tried the Nexens on my own car but have driven someone else's with them & yes they're terrible but I've had the Nanbangs on my car & they were easily the worst tyre I've ever driven on.

I'm a big believer in only using quality tyres I've got Yokohama Advans on at the moment & the difference is worlds apart even if you don't drive hard in an emergency situation the difference could be life & death so I wont compromise.

Cheap tyres means cheap performance, for boy racers who like to drive like idiots on the street get some decent branded and performance oriented tyres instead of bagging out cheap tyres because cheap is what they are and the performance is reflected in their price.

George,
Can you please elaborate on the SPs "tramlining". Never experienced this on mine... maybe you're more of a hoon at times...Just joking

This is a great topic. Ironically I really like the dunlop sp3000a from factory for the ba's. Ironically they have been the best tyre I have ever had. They stop the car and they are the longest lasting tyre I have ever had...

I agree with the difference between cheap tyres and value for money tyres, however a lot of the time when you put lower end tyres on, it only takes a close call or some aspect of performance to not meet your needs to think I should have gone the next set up. For the sake of saving a few dollars a corner you're left with a set of rubber you have doubts about. For an extra couple of hundred of $ a good set will not be a waste of money considering how often you actually spend money on tyres.

I have never driven on nexens of nankangs however if I was seeking advice on them, there are too many conflicting opinions and I would have counted them out already.

What are your experiences on these tyres? Previous comment already noted, cheers.

The Hankooks are silica aren't they? They are supposed to be good gripping and quiet also.

I think I'll take the SP3000's off my list, I had a set (2nd hand in all fairness) that tramlined really bad. Quite unsettling on the family wagon for sure!

Comments again please.

JC, IIRC, you've tried the 405's have you not? Or was it the 107's? If so, you'd be in a good place to compare them.

GK
I've had both the K102 and K104s. Both were very good tyres, and to be honest, the NS2s are on par with them.

ClassicAU - don't mean to be rude, but stop being a brand snob. The NS2s will outperform lots of name brand tyres. These tyres are not going to see track days, or warp speeds. They are being fitted to a family car driven in a sensible (though sometimes spirited) manner by a family man. Even if they were fitted to a "sports" car, they are up to the job. I had them on the XR8, and now have them on the wagon, and have found them to cope with my aggressive driving style rather well.

I have also had Dunlop SP3000Es, and in comparison, the Dunlop's were crap. Very "squishy" under cornering, and not very stable in the wet.

That is rubbish. Motor does a tyre test every year, and every year, the cheapest tyre has often been at the top of the table in at least one or more of the tests they run, and usually not last in the overall. I started using Hankooks and Kumho Ecsta because of these tyre tests, and the Nankangs are comparable to both. The Nexens are not quite as good. The important thing about performance tyres is:
1. Silica compound helps in the wet
2. Aggressive tread pattern helps disperse water
3. Traction of A at least required
4. Good wear rating (around 280+ is good) for longevity.

The Nankangs have all of the above - some more expensive tyres don't.

I found the Nankangs to be good at first .... but after some time I am getting really uneven wear (even though i keep my alignment in check regularly).

I live on rougher country roads ... and i do a lot of stop/start driving .... after time they have gotten quite noisy as well ... and grip levels are starting to drop now especially in the wet.

I have managed about 40-45,000km so far ... and I think they are ready for replacement (just due to bad uneven wear).

I am with Stav on the SP3000A's ... had them on a previous ute ... and I was very happy with them indeed ... although a bit pricier ... they worked well.

I am thinking my next replacement tyre though is will most likely be a Hankook K104. I'd love to have very grippy tyres ... but I can't afford to replace them every 20,000km.

My old Sava Intensas were better than I expected ... I managed nearly 70,000km from them ... even wear ... a little loud ... not the best wet grip ... but handled heavy load well.
