No, i had moved.
Just pointing out that i didn't really need to do anything special to change my address, they did it for me.

EDIT: and my dad, who has almost the same name as me and lives in my previous electorate, got a fine or warning or something in the mail for not voting, though it was me that didn't vote there
He got one of the local electoral people to sort it out though, so he never had to pay anything.

Ok I have been reading the Electoral information and found that is illegal to not register to vote:

Subject to subsection (5A), every person who is entitled to have his or her name placed on the Roll for any Subdivision whether by way of enrolment or transfer of enrolment, and whose name is not on the Roll upon the expiration of 21 days from the date upon which the person became so entitled, or at any subsequent date while the person continues to be so entitled, shall be guilty of an offence unless he or she proves that the non-enrolment is not in consequence of his or her failure to send or deliver to a Divisional Returning Officer or an Australian Electoral Officer, a claim, duly filled in and signed in accordance with the directions printed thereon.

As I understand the above you have 21 days after turning 18 or from changing address to have your name put on the Roll or have your details updated. You have 9 days from now to get your change of adress details updated with the AEC and for a new voter you have till 8 pm this Wednesday to register.

I hope this is bit clearer.

This comes from this AEC link

big_pete, I have just changed my name & address. If you go to the local Post Office they have the forms needed. Easy to do & post off while your there, makes it a very painless exercise ;)

AS mentioned above -
It IS an offence to NOT be enrolled.
It IS an offence to NOT attend a polling place to have your name marked off the role as having voted at an election.

ie - Once you turn 18, you MUST have your name on the role, and have it marked off for each and every election (be that local council, state, or federal election, as well as referendums.) unless you have a valid excuse. Once the election has been called you have a short period of time to have your details enterred onto the role, in order to be added to the role for the upcoming election. I was on the belief that it was no more then 24hrs. Enrolment to vote forms are available free of charge(including the postage costs) at any post office across Australia.

Tis interesting to note that the role is used to send out infringement notices to those that haven't voted. If your name isn't on the role - how do they know who to send the notice to???
Having said that, the roles are frequently updated, via a doorknock process, as well as other cross referenced checks to see if residents do currently reside at their enrolled address.

Each polling place generally has "elector information booklets" to allow for relatives etc to pass on valid reasons to polling officials as to why an enrolled voter isn't able to present to place a vote.(Deseased / Overseas travel etc) If unable to be present on voting day you can 'pre-poll'(ie vote before the day), at pre poll centres, or obtain a postal vote. Interstate voters looking to vote on the day will be referred to a pre- poll centre (BUSY!!) so the tip is to get it out of the way before the day. In addition the AEC arranges to have polling officials attend gaols / hospitals / nursing homes to assist in ensuring votes are collected.

just a tip for those that are enrolled. you have to put a voting slip in the box but you dont have to vote if you cant be bothered.

i usually just draw something funny or write a nice message to the person who ends up reading it

People who don't take the time to understand what both parties (really) offer and don't take the time to vote properly should NEVER complain about anything politially related...

Exactly right mate, there are certain people who have posted in this thread stating that they have never voted and never will, yet they have attempted to engage in political debate in other threads, they realise that they are not happy but are to stupid to realise they could change it.

Actually we dont read them, just havent got the time. The Processors just look for the correct marks and thats it. if you dont want to vote, once your name has been marked off the roll take the voting slips turn around and put them in the voting box and walk out, it only takes a few moments either way whether you vote or not. The people at the voting booths are more then willing to help make this a quick and painless process.

You obviously have no comprehension of how a country is run in a successful manner, our form of democracy has given us a stable country for nearly 200 hundred years, maybe you should have never registered to vote in the first place? but maybe your parents had brains in there heads and encouraged you to do so.

Let me no what the better alternative to democracy is?

i dont know where you are getting the idea that i am against democracy. as 4Vman said the USA works fine without compulsory voting.

you should be happy that people like me who dont care about politics dont vote. if you are an informed voter and vote in the way that is best for the country, would you like someone who doesnt care to cancel out your vote by voting for the opposite candidate just because they are forced into line?

No mate the usa doesnt work just fine, the only people who vote in america are educated upper class rich people,I guess thats why that countrys wealth is so un-evenly spread,i.e. rich have everything, poor have nothing and there is no middle class anymore, there welfare system is all but non existant and unless you have private health insurance you die or sell your house to pay for your medical expenses.

I would rather you vote for a party with entirely differant ideology to me then not vote at all, after all it is differant and diverse opinions that create democracy and democracy wouldnt work to well if no one voted mate.

ok so tell me who you are voting for & i will vote the opposite lol

just kidding mate

i dont know how compulsory voting would fix those problems you listed but as i said i dont follow politics

all i know is that me voting on the 24th of november wont make a lick of difference to anything. if the PM changes because one person didnt vote i'll send you a slab of beer

people who want their voices heard can vote. those who just dont care who the PM is should be able to have a sleep in lol
