Actually they fired them from the ground up into the boom of the black hawk, the yanks didn't think it was posible as the blast back would toast the operator, but they used holes in the ground behind the operator for the blast to go into.
Read the book several times and the movie shows the same

Also read the book written by the Black hawk pilot that lived and was captured, he says the same thing
