i dont see the big issue really. obviously some will take it too far, but you get that with any recreational activity.

some light hearted fun for 99% of those involved. but reading some of the facebook comments you would think the participants were child sacrificing devil worshippers or something.

It may seem that way but the reason we have the so called nanny state is when idiots " just having a bit of fun" get killed. this leads to us all being over regulated

Lots and lots. I live in a high rise on the Gold Coast surrounded by numerous other high rise appartments. I have lost count of the amount of times I have seen w...... either sitting with legs hanging over balcony rails or even stupider yet climbing from one balcony to their friends on the neighbouring balcony. I watched a guy do it from the 18th floor only a couple of weekends ago. They same sort of moron that "planks" on a balcony would be my guess.

Nanny state, we are now a nanny country my friend, over governed & over policed where fun is now outlawed. We need to stop being lazy Aussies & say to them, enough of this crap.

But just think, plankers probably say we're idiots for spending lots of money on old cars, the government doesn't want them either.

It would appear that this 'fun' may have cost the life of a 20 year old in Brisbane last night...I doubt this kind of skylarking counts as 'fun' given this news...

Quote:
A MAN who plunged to his death from a Brisbane unit balcony was planking, and police fear it will not be the last death due to the new craze.

Planking involves participants lying flat on their stomach in different and sometimes dangerous settings and sharing photographs of their efforts with fellow plankers.

The man, aged in his early 20s, fell from an innercity unit block in Kangeroo Point's Main Street and died at the scene shortly before 4.30am today.

Deputy Commissioner Ross Barnett said the man had been trying to lie on the balcony rail when he fell.

He said the man and another person had been planking in various spots on their way home from a night out.

"He has tragically lost his footing and fallen to the ground below," Mr Barnett said.

"It is what we've been fearing."

The deputy commissioner said he did not know whether it was Australia's first death from the recent craze.

However, he feared it would not be the last as plankers tried to out-do each other in more and more dangerous places.

"Police fear that as planking gains popularity there may be more injuries and, potentially, further deaths," Mr Barnett said.

He warned plankers they would be charged if they tried the fad in dangerous locations. A 20-year-old man was issued with a court appearance notice for trespass when he was found planking on a squad car in Gladstone last week.

"Accepting a risk of injury for yourself is one thing, but the potential is there for others to be injured as a result of your behaviour," he said.

"But no penalty will ever return this young man to his family and friends.

"This is a tragedy and our condolences go to the family."

i think Extreme Ironing is a much better craze..

planking just looks dumb... but watching a scuba diver try to iron a shirt underwater at least has some comedic value.

This is as stupid as chroming IMO...serious who are these people?

I agree its silly that things like this become a "craze", its a sheep mentality. The problem occurs when drunktards give it a crack and the above happens.

When I first heard/read about it I was like WTF, then I got even more angry when I realised that MAINSTREAM media has nothing better to do than talk about it..DH's.

Everyone makes choices, but jesus, why did this get any airtime? It just gave stupid people something else to waste their time with. Media should be ashamed for talking about it, IIRC it was on the front page of the Herald Sun FFS...its a toilet paper establishment but it gets around.

QPS had it as a Facebook update...the amount of people that were asking WTF was phenomenal, it seems to have escalated from there...

It seems there are brain dead people everywhere, and the need to 'go one better' than their mate is still alive and well in our society. Sheep mentality and people who obviously have too much time on their hands and not enough brains in their heads...

Everyones complaining about planking and how stupid it is, yeah it may be stupid, but I'm sure theres many out there who think modifying cars, doing burnouts, big displacement engines, more than 4 cylinders and racing cars is stupid as well.

So far we know one person has died because of it, how many people have died behind the wheel of a car doing silly things?

Its not like they're causing anybody harm, chances are they'll only kill themselves.
