The role (beyond revenue) for speed cameras is to put them at specific spots that are either black spots, or knowen for high rates off speeding.

Actually no it's the opposite.
If 20,000 people speed past there a week and no one crashes, there should be a raise in the speed limit. If they raised the limit by a reasonable amount, then put a camera in, that would make more sense, but less money.

Its how the world works.

Exactly, and if they raised the limit, by let's say 10km/h, they would still be able to send a fine out to the numpties doing close to 200km/h past it, while the average punter would have a few more clams in their pocket to spread the joy at christmas.

This ones for you VIC fella's...My brother and i went on a roadtrip down to do the Great Ocean Road for a few days in my xr6t. Had a great trip until a few weeks later when a penalty notice came in the mail from VIC roads. We got pinged at Hoppers Crossing (i think the camera near the bridge?) for doing 105 in 100...what a joke!!! That is simply revenue raising and does nothing to decreasing the death toll on our roads
Michael
On a road built to a 110 kph standard, but kept to 100 because of some bullcrap regulation, and hasn't had any more than 1 or 2 fatalities in the past 5 years despite the huge traffic volumes.

Its a joke.

Ahh, so that's why my V1 has been going off every time I go past that spot.

It's a laser activated camera in a silver (phone-booth size) box and it scans the rear of passing vehicles... very very sneaky

Everyone speeds here and there has been 6 deaths this year out of maybe 350,000. Pure revenue raising but I have to say you're pretty dumb if you get done by a camera here

Agree how it's revenue raising, if they really wanted to see a decline in fatalities then the roads should have much wider shoulders, guard rails near trees and better quality surfaces that don't need so much repair work (like the sturdy concrete roads near Wagga) and also al the ****** boxes should be taken off the roads and i don't mean cars too old to have all the traction tech just common sense things like dodgy brakes, mangled headlights, no tail lights etc.. Certain late 80s early 90s commodores spring to mind...

probably not - the average punter would raise their speed by 10kph and still get caught because they were unaware of what they were doing when going past the camera

it could be argued, that the cameras and speed limits are not the problem - people driving too close to the limit is. raising the limit will do nothing to stop people getting pinged for 2 kph over. they will just get pinged at 112 kph, not 102 pkh

It's a dual edged sword, lack of maintenance is then replaced by over servicing.

IMO, recommended service intervals should be mandatory and a log book maintained to prove same.
Nothing more than that is required as reputable mechanics already have the power to sideline defective vehicles.

Of course in the interests of balanced reporting a speed breakdown (ie: 5k over..10k over etc) should have been published.

But that would be truthful and not make good headlines.

I know this is an old thread but I've made a strange observation.

When this camera was first setup, my V1 would go off every time I drove past it but during the past few weeks, nothing.

It goes crazy when I drive past the mobile speed camera's so it's not my radar detector.

Does anyone know if it's been turned off?

I'm curious on how a speed camera actually works? There are a few hidden behind overhead signs on the ring road here in Melbourne, wouldn't it need to use some sort of infared laser or something similar to measure how quickly you are approaching from a distance?

They're right behind the signs, on a bridge looking directly down, how would that even work?

umm, they would be correct. the camera doesn't take a photo of your speedo, it detects the car's actual speed.

They're awesome, saved me heaps of times even with the new laser camera's...but you have to be quick to stomp on the brakes.

Made of military grade titanium so leaving it on your windscreen through summer is not a problem.

How accurate are these V1 things? Considering getting one. My no speeding fine record is pretty good and I'd like to keep it.

If you have a look on the road under a speed camera, there is magnetic metal bars.

The metal bars messure the speed of the car traveling over it. The only thing behind the sign is the camera it self.

Everyone is going on about how these camera's are money making etc, but those people that have been caught at high speed, without those camera's these people would still be on the road.

I'd argue that if 20,000 people a week are getting pinged from the speed cameras, then the cameras are a waste of time regarding lowering speeds to signposted speed limts.

So if they are ineffectual for the 1,000,000 odd drivers a year, what other reasons are the cameras there for?

TOP GEAR Australia JUNE 2012 magazine page 57.
In Victoria 146 drivers are fined for speeding an hour. Thats 3500 fines per day or $227m a year.
Of those fines, 923,300 are under 10km/hr. Thats 72%.
or 923,300 paid $137m in fines....
my comment..and its not about revenue raising ?????????????

Revenue, and if they werent collecting we would be hit with taxes that may not be avoidable.
Keep speed cameras and pokies etc as I would rather an option on what tax I would like to "donate" to rather than say an increase on income tax or basic food.
That said I do think the govt should fess up and stop hiding behind the safety at all costs mantra.
Govts want the revenue, TAC want people to slow down (less payouts) and they both want to convey an attitude they really care about your well being.

As others have said Radar Detectors are illegal in all states except WA.

And most highway cars have really cute gadgets fitted that can pick them up.
